[Solved] Can't add chapters to Masters Report template

Postby KariK » Fri Mar 27, 2020 2:09 am

I need to write a paper for a class but do not have access to Office. I am using OpenOffice Writer but am a novice user. I found a template I like: Masters Report (https://templates.openoffice.org/zh-han ... ers-report) and started using it. However, I can not figure out how to add chapters to my document. Has anyone used that template or knows enough about templates to give me some hints? Or is there some other good template for a (Physics) class paper?

As a new poster you will find much useful information in the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials, the up to date AOO Writer for Students and the Writer User Guide. May I suggest you bookmark the pages.

Make sure you read AOO Writer for Students - it is good and gives a thorough overview.

Press F1 to access the Help screen and search for your problem

The chapter headings in the manual are:

1 - Introducing Writer
2 - Setting up Writer
3 - Working with Text
4 - Formatting Pages
5 - Printing, Exporting, Faxing and E-Mailing
6 - Introduction to Styles
7 - Working with Styles
8 - Working with Graphics
9 - Working with Tables
10 - Working with Templates
11 - Using Mail Merge
12 - Tables of Contents, Indexes and Bibliographies
13 - Working with Master Documents
14 - Working with Fields
15 - Using Forms in Writer
16 - Customizing Writer – Keyboard shortcuts.

When a pop-up window opens, click the Help button for extensive help on that function - it is often more comprehensive than the manual.

By "add chapters" I presume you mean add Chapter 4.

1. Add a Page Break. By default (you can change it) this adds a new page with Default Page Style.
2. Type Chapter 4
3. Highlight it and select Style Title. This sets the style almost correct but does not right justify it so right justify it.
4. right-click in the ToC > Update index. Chapter 4 will appear.

You will probably find it easier to start from scratch and design your own document rather than learning someone else's template and coping with their errors. Problems in this template include how the ToC is defined (Introduction comes last in each section), the fonts (do you have Cantarell? etc), it is set to US English.

Showing that a problem has been solved helps others searching so, if your problem is now solved, please view your first post in this thread and click the Edit button (top right in the post) and add [Solved] in front of the subject.
