[Solved] Old windows - New OpenOffice

Postby wukorisi » Fri Dec 06, 2019 5:41 am

Hello, small buisness needs your help
Windows 7 support will end on January 14, 2020.
Should we buy ver.10 for OpenOffice new releases at the future?
Thank you.

Welcome to the Forums.
OpenOffice works, within reason, just fine on most versions of Windows.
The lack of support from Microsoft will not affect your ability to use and get help with OpenOffice.
Frankly, there isn't much development of OpenOffice, so if keeping things up-to-date is important to you, you might want to consider using LibreOffice
You can run both OpenOffice and LibreOffice on the same machine, and, if it's powerful enough, even at the same time if you want to try both for a one-to-one comparison.
OpenOffice 4.1.7 and LibreOffice 6.3.3.2 on Windows 7 Pro & Ultimate

Many using older versions of Windows and not wishing to move to Windows 10 have changed to one of the linux distros. Most linux distros can be tried from a live DVD or USB key to see which one prefers. My choice was for Xubuntu, but there are many others, each with its own advocates.

You could also try ReactOS, a clean-room replacement for Windows. This also can be tried from a live DVD/USB key.

Bad advise. Don't follow it. ReactOS is still in the alpha stage and nobody knows when (or even if) it will be production-ready.

Better, yes, settle down with a good Linux distro (in my opinion, it is definitely openSUSE, but you’d better try a couple of live builds to decide).

If ReactOS works it works. As a Windows lookalike it may be less traumatic for a normal (out of the box) user than the shift to linux.
