[Solved] OpenOffice Crash Recovery Loop When Opening ODT

Postby avixvi379 » Tue Nov 26, 2019 6:57 am

Hi so I have been working on this document for two years now. Last night. when I went to open it, Open Office crashed after about 20 seconds of inactivity. Now, whenever I try to open the file, it does this again, recovers the document and opens it, then crashes again, continuously. I have tried opening the file in safe mode, updating and rolling back Open Office versions, resetting the user profile, changing my proxy settings... no solution that I have found in these forums has worked for me, so I am humbly uploading the file here in hopes that some one will be able to help. The issue disappeared for about half an hour last night then came back today. I'm lost, hopeless, and confused at this point. Thank you for any help that can be given. I tried uploading the file with the built in feature but it just resets the page, so here is a link to the file: https://mega.nz/#!MY0m2KAR!F6L0cZ6c5f6a ... Ljy_qytwVw

I can read and open it with:
LibreOffice 6.2.7
ApacheOffice 4.2

I nead to restart LibreOffice one time but only the first time. Possible ApacheOffice needs a little more time.

OK. Where does OpenOffice store it's cache for where you were editing last time the document was opened? Because even after deleting the user profile and uninstalling/reinstalling it opened up the document to where I was. I want to test opening it "for the first time" and see if that somehow fixes the issue.

This is the link to the file.
I hope you can access it there I do not use it real often to upload a file.
The file is a little longer then your file and stored with LibreOffice.

Well I don't know what you did, but the file isn't crashing now. I have some reformatting to do with it and it's missing a lot of the images now, but I have all that backed up. Considering the lack of images, now, is it possible that the issue was something to do with it trying to load the images from my files? Like should I load them into the document differently? I have been selecting Insert>Picture>From File. I wish I knew what caused it in case it happens again. But regardless, thank you. You just saved a lot of head ache.

I have no answers on your questions. Maybe there are to much images in memory.
I hope you have learned to make real often backups.

I do not understand what your document must do but maybe it is better to make a real database with links to the images but first restore your document and study a little.

A helpful thread I found on image handling which includes some advice relevant to the issues I've had: viewtopic.php?f=71&t=86682

Two years editing, and you don't make daily backups?

I don't have dailies, no. I have monthlies. I don't work on it that often, unfortunately. The trouble is that even the backups were failing to load. I don't know what happened. But I'm just thankful the issue is solved.

And actually the file that RPG sent me is now crashing as well and I haven't done anything to it except open it and open up an image's properties. *Shrugs*

Start Windows in Safe Mode and try running OpenOffice while Windows is in that mode. If it runs stable we are one step nearer a solution.

You have found a good link about images. I do have the idea it is good for you to study some tutorials about organizing a complex writer document.

I have the idea that tables in tables is not such a good idea special not with such a lot of images. Maybe you can use also master documents. But maybe the most important question is: Is writer of ApacheOffice or LibreOffice a good choice.

For both questions I have not a clear answer there I do not use such complex documents.

What I have learned that with good organized documents OpenOffice can handle real complex documents.

For about the last half hour I have been able to edit without crashing. This was after a LOT of steps including: Changing the Memory and Graphics Cache from Default to Max, Batch Editing the images so that Open Office was not having to resize them into the document, adding wider margins to the pages, and reformatting each table so that it had the exact same settings as all other similar tables. Regardless, from what I can see, this is more user error than an error with OpenOffice. I should have been more knowledgeable in changing the settings for such a complex document, as well as less lazy with my formatting. Keeping things consistent seems to have done wonders the processing of the document as well as the crashing issue.

Also, from my experience I have not been able to edit this well in Libre. I tried using Libre to save it when Open Office was crashing and I found it easier to allow Open Office to continuously crash as I edited reformatted than trying even a little editing in Libre.
