OpenOffice ASCII filter while opening doc file

Postby calvincheng » Thu Oct 24, 2019 11:14 am

My computer crashed while I was in the middle of writing, I open my computer after 20 hours, my file got corrupted, when I open it, it shows ascii filter, I choose my language or I had tried all type of language it shows #### in the whole file, I had find out and put the hide file with the corrupt file in the same folder, I used OO 4, window 7 with SSD, save as words 97 formats in normal hard drive (non-SSD), how can I open the file again?

Such corruption can happen if the power to the computer fails when the file is open. It can also occur if the power is cut or the laptop lid closed over-hastily, before the OpenOffice housekeeping information has been flushed to disk from the internal write buffers in the computer or the hard disk.

Use the methods in this tutorial to try to find temporary copies of your file used by OO. Do this as soon as possible.

Edit: Waste no time with your #### file. It will have no usable content.

As you have a SSD you will probably not find any deleted files if the Temp path uses the SSD.

Look instead for temporary files which are still there. As Rory says your #### file is completely useless as it has no user data in it.

See [Tutorial] Differences between Writer and MS Word files for why you should always work in and save files as .odt.

I had try un-delete AOO temporary files, but I save as words 97 formats, so cannot find any file like svr3sq9.tmp folder in C drive

but I had the hidden file with the corrupt file in the same folder, does it help?

If the hidden file is of form
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
.~lock.FileName.odt#

it is merely a lock file to prevent two write accesses to your original (now destroyed) file at the same time and will have no useful content.

When you save as a .doc file no temporary files are created when you edit a document and the document is only held in memory making it VERY vulnerable to failures. Use the other methods suggested in the tutorial.

In future always save as .odt and create a COPY as a .doc if essential.

That is merely a housekeeping file, as I explained earlier. There will be nothing usable in it.

Try the undelete methods on the normal hard drive - you may recover some, all, or none, but trying won't hurt.

Error 0x800300FB looks like a Microsoft Windows error message. At a guess it is identifying a damaged file; querying this error on a Windows help site might find a solution.

Some success with open office somehow, not sure what I did exactly.
Downloaded Libre Office, and free version of Adobe, managed to open files, also exported as PDF in Libre Office.
Tried opening files in Open office and got a different message, read only, copy and cancel box came up, selected copy and it opened up file.
Some files open and some still display ASCII Box.
Best of luck
