Corrupted drawing document only opens scrambled in writer

Postby yoramdavid » Fri Jun 10, 2016 12:10 am

Hi all,

I have libreoffice 4.2.8.2
I have a .odg document which I cannot open with draw, it automatically opens with writer. If I open draw and try to open the document there, it does not open it, writer does and it appears as scrambled text only.
I tried to open the file with archive manager but it cannot open the file either, even if I change the extension to .zip.
I attached the file in question.

Any help would be appreciated.

David.

Sorry, I don't see any recoverable data in there.

Often such corruption occurs because the computer is closed down before the housekeeping of OpenOffice is complete. It is advisable to shut down a computer using the correct shutdown procedure and wait until all disk activity is complete before turning off the power.

It can also happen when using removable media (a USB drive, for example).

To expand on acknak's posting: it has been reported that working directly from OpenOffice to a file on a USB stick may cause spontaneous corruption. Whether this is so or not, if one must work direct to a USB stick, one _must_ observe the USB device removal protocols demanded by the operating system and wait for all device access to cease - which can take a few seconds longer than expected. Simply pulling the USB stick out of the computer is a sure recipe for file corruption.

We recommend transfer of the file to the local hard disk, working on it there, then transfer back to the USB (with observance of the protocols, as above). This has the advantage of leaving a copy of the file on the hard disk in the event of file corruption.

Yes, I always remove USB drives the safe way, but I never work from an external device, I work directly from the computer and create backups regularly on an external drive (which already had a copy of the corrupted file).
Thanks.

USB media has a reputation for going bad. There's a lot of really cheap (as in poor-quality) storage around. I have USB sticks that I've used for ten years without a hitch, but maybe I'm just lucky. At any rate, it's not a bad strategy to work from the hard drive and only make copies on the removable media for transport. If it does go bad, or get lost, you still have a copy on the hard drive.
