Apache OpenOffice 4.1.7 on Xubuntu 20.04.1 (mostly 64 bit version) and very infrequently on Win2K/XP

RoryOF's tip works for text in Writer pages.

For text in Draw objects:
Select the rectangle. Menu item Format - Text and select the text tab.

Select one of the middle anchoring positions (left, center or right, which anchoring is optimal depends to some degree on what horizontal alignment you select.)
Apache OO 3.4.1/4.1.2/4.1.3, on Ms Windows 7/10 and Mac OS-X 10.8.5 and 10.11.
LibreOffice 4.3.3.2 on Mepis Antix MX 14
