[Solved] using URL to link to external data not working

Postby SteveH_66 » Sun Apr 13, 2008 5:13 pm

I did a search and found some posts that discussed a problem like I am experiencing, not being able to get the "Link to External Data" option to work for me. I paste a URL into the box, and the OK button stays grayed out. I saw someone kindly offer to try to get it to work for the poster in that post, and I thought I would ask for help and I can provide the links to the pages and the links to the data here so that someone could check it out and see if they could get it to work for them, if someone would be so kind. :) What I am trying to do is get data from either yahoo! finance or some other site, I have also used the EDGAR site on the sec.gov website as well, neither are working for me :(

The URL for the webpage on yahoo is this:

And the URL for the particular piece of data I need, in this case the Total Liabilities and Shareholders Equity figure for 2007 is this:

over on the sec.gov site the page url is this:

And the URL for the particular target data is this:

I put the URL's in quotation marks, so that you would be able to see the full URL, if you don't do so the forum here automatically turns them into links, and shortens the URL in some cases.

Thanks, Steve

The first 2 yahoo-links work for me.

OK, I found out what I was doing wrong. After I pasted the URL into the cell, I just needed to hit the Enter key and it went into the next box, where you choose what table or ranges to insert in the cell. So now I can insert the URL, and it gives me the whole table in the spreadsheet. Now I just need to either figure out how to get the reference for just the cells I need from the table, or I will have to do a lot of editing to the spreadsheet, deleting out extra rows. But at least I have it working now. And I am not sure if this page at yahoo is actually using a table or a java script or PHP or what. Thanks for your help :)
