I formatted a row calculation to read in %. Now I want to delete that calculation from selected cells and replace it with just a figure. Tried "special paste" instructions from community support but couldn't make it work.

Highlight the cell(s) that you want to replace. If more than one, I recommend ensuring that they are contiguous (ie: no breaks).
Press Ctrl+C (copy)
Place the cursor on the first cell where you want to number pasted.
Press Ctrl+Shift+V (Paste Special)
Ensure that Formulas are unchecked
Decide which, if any others, you want to check/uncheck.
Click OK

Thanks. Did that, formulas unchecked, still can't get rid of the % format in those cells. It originally came from row format. Can I insert a pdf file to show you what I have?

It'd be better for you to upload a copy of your actual spreadsheet.
There's information in this tutorial about anonymizing and attaching a document to the forum.
However, before you go that step, you could also try ensuring that Formats is also unchecked in the Paste Special or use Ctrl+M for the highlighted cell(s)

To override a row format for some cells, just apply whatever formatting you want to those cells.

If you want the default, "dynamic" format (which will recognize some data types on input, and adjust display accordingly), specify "Default" as the format code.
