[Solved] Writing vertically without rotating the text?

I've been trying to find a way to write vertically without changing the rotation of the characters.

S l
o i
m k
e e
t
h t
i h
n i
g s,

But without having to do manual breaks for every character, and still follow the usual text flow except vertically.
All the options I've found rotates the whole text, even the text direction options.
Is it even possible?

I do not know, how to achieve this, but - I think it - you must use a monospace font.

Multicolumn sample document with monospace font and double non-breaking spaces:

Create columns only 1 character wide. It doesn't handle spaces well so use non-breaking spaces instead. Spell check still works but not with non-breaking spaces.

Or use a table with narrow columns. Text will not flow from the bottom to the top of the next column. You still need non-breaking spaces (grey in image) to force the space between words. Switch off the cell borders.

I think if you use a monospaced font such as Courier no padding will be needed.

Thank you everyone!
The column one seems to be the most convenient method, and comes the closest to what I had in mind.
There are still some hassles, but it seems to be unavoidable when writing vertically, no matter the method.
