[Solved] Password locked file

Postby rhennessy@nyc.rr.com » Sat Nov 09, 2019 11:10 pm

Hi
I have a file that is locked by password, but I did not create a password for it. I would like to know how to bypass the password and be able to edit the file.

Can you help?

What file type, please. Is it prompting you for a password, or is it asking for choice of ASCII character set?

Maybe you have been infected by a cryptolocker?

That's why I'm asking for the file type - often the extension has a ransom type appended, as in this thread

By default, File Explorer hides file name extensions in Windows 10.

If you do not recollect entering a password, try opening it with a blank password; otherwise, I fear it is locked beyond any reasonable form of recovery.

The file is locked for editing, I can still view the contents.

That is different! You are fortunate - normally a passworded file won't open for reading or anything. Open a blank document, switch to the passworded file, Ctrl A to select all, Ctrl C to copy, switch to the blank fill, click in it, the Ctrl V to Paste the clipboard into the new file, and Save As with a different name to the passworded file.
