[Solved] Can I create a scrollable text box with OpenOffice?

Postby tomx2 » Tue Aug 21, 2018 10:08 am

Hi.
I have a 4 page document, 2 pages are technical jargon. I would like to enclose the 2 page text in a text box. I also need a scroll bar enabled for continuous reading. The text box should appear in the middle of my document. I tried pulling in a rectangular box. No scrollbar displayed after continuous typing.

Can someone walk me through how to create a simple Text box in OpenOffice?
How would I move my existing text into the Text box? Copy/paste?
When I copy my main document (to another user), do I highlight the Text box for transfer?

See my attachment as examples of what I'm looking for.

Thanks.
TC.

View>Toolbars>Form Controls
Button #2 toggles the form design mode on and off. Turn it on.
Click the text box button and draw a rectangle.
Double-click the rectangle to open the properties dialog.

On the first tab:
Text type: Multi line
Scrollbars: both

Just 1 more question. The text box is create with my typed comments. Thanks.
I want to send the Text Box along with my saved document to a User Forum. Similar to this forum.
I did a "select all" to copy the the document to the user body forum and pasted. The Text Box did not transfer over.
How can I bring in the text box with my document to a forum for other users to read?

Copied from an OpenOffice multi-line text box into a Firefox browser (Linux):
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view

Curabitur dignissim sapien quis cursus egestas. Donec blandit auctor arcu, nec pellentesque eros molestie eget. In consectetur aliquam hendrerit. Sed cursus mauris vitae ligula pellentesque, non pellentesque urna aliquet. Fusce placerat mauris enim, nec rutrum purus semper vel. Praesent tincidunt neque eu pellentesque pharetra. Fusce pellentesque est orci.

Hi Vulleroy.

There is something I'm missing trying to Post my text box (as you did successfully) to a forum.
Not sure if it's additional options to check in properties or missing a command.
Let me explain step-by-step.
I have provided screenshots for your review.
I appreciate your patience. :|

Here are the steps I did along with the problem.
In Open Office I created a multi-line Text Box having up/down Scroll-bars.
Went to View/ToolBar/Form Control See ScreenShot12
The only options changed in text box properties were multi-line, and scroll-bar = vertical.
Note: I did not need horizontal for my text box.

Next I edited the Text Box inserting Linux commands & reports for members to review.
To edit, I turned Design mode off and typed text comment in the box. Saved text box.
See ScreenShot12 again to see text inside box.

To transfer my doc and text box to a forum, I did a Select All of my document page, then CopySee Screenshot13.
Finally, I went to Forum's “Body”, I right click and selected paste.

The comment line pasted. The physical Text Box having my reports is missing.
No error messages, it just didn't transfer.
See Screenshot10.

Think of 2 different layers. Or think of a form application embedded in the office document. The form controls are designed to edit database data. You can copy either one of document text or database text.

You'll need to use whatever tools the other forum software provides to insert a scrollable section of text. For example, in this forum, you use the CODE tags to enclose the text.
For instance, this text, showing the code tags
will be displayed here thus:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
Sed ut perspiciatis unde omnis iste natus error sit voluptatem accusantium doloremque laudantium, totam rem aperiam, eaque ipsa quae ab illo inventore veritatis et quasi architecto beatae vitae dicta sunt explicabo. Other forums, using other forum software, may do it differently.
Cheers

JUST TESTING A TEXT BOX BEFORE POSTING. HOPEFULLY THIS WORKS ;) . THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. I am using TL-WN822N V4 external usb interface adapter for my Ubuntu distro installed on a USB bootable Flash Drive.
Use this dongle to get wireless connection to a wifi hotspot.
Get the login page and connect/surf the internet. Medium to slow browsing...............

Note that, at least on this forum and possibly on others depending on the forum software, there is a button which will allow you to preview your post prior to submitting it; meaning you don't necessarily need to send a TEST post to see how it might look..

Seriously?

Making a test post here before you post on a different forum? Using this forum as a drafting tool/scratchpad? Is that your business here.

It is not a big problem to the forum. You asked a valid question and got an adequate response which may be useful to someone else. With that, this thread adds to the value of the forum. However, that last post does reflect a denigrating attitude towards this place, which may offend some people, which again may affect their attitude towards you.

Also, you can't be sure that the same features are enabled on that other forum and yield the same output, even when they use the same server software updated to the same version. Robleyd's tip about preview is a better bet. Most forums also permit editing of your own posts, at least up to a point.
