Opening a document freezes OpenOffice

Postby Theratonji » Mon Sep 14, 2020 4:20 am

Recently was working in a document used all the time and it suddenly quit working. a message appeared that said bad allocation or something like that.
Now when I try to open the document it opens OpenOffice and acts like it is going to open then everything in OpenOffice stops working. I cant close it or use any controls. I have to go to Task Manager and end Task. The document was created in Writer and on this laptop. Any suggestions on a fix?

Welcome to the Forums.
Please note that your forum signature states that you are using an Unofficial version of OpenOffice.
This forum is support for the official versions of OpenOffice and some of the forks thereof, such as LibreOffice.

As to your query, there is a known bug regarding the usage of large files, which a search of the forum for the term "bad allocation" (including the quoates) brings up 412 posts (including yours).
This is mainly noted in Calc files, but by no means is it limited to just Calc.

OpenOffice Unofficial Version 4.1.8.0

Is it a pre-released (Beta) version, or a newer, independent fork?

Thank you for pointing me at the thread. I read a bunch and decided to try the Libre Office. Turns out I had 3 documents with the same problem.
I was able to get them open using the Libre Office. It told me all three documents were locked to editing but allowed me to open them. I would rather keep on using OpenOffice but can't seem to figure out how to unlock the documents that I did not lock. AS for the Unofficial Open Office I mistyped. I downloaded from Microsoft store.

Enable Viewing of hidden and archive documents for the folder in which you have Saved these documents; with Open- or Libre-Office closed, delete the lock files which were left after the program aborted. Now the main files should open without problem.

One should only download OpenOffice from
http://www.openoffice.org/download/
as automatically redirected.

It may be OP is using Windows 10S which would restrict them to software from the Microsoft store.
