[Solved] Selecting Custom Size Paper for printing

Postby brbrown » Mon Sep 07, 2020 5:50 pm

I am new to Open office and have produced an index for a CD the size of 12.2 mm x 12.2 mm I was able to set in the Open Office Writer but I cannot find how to set the custom size of paper to print it to. The list of paper size options does not appear to show a custom size setting. Could someone please tell me how I can do it?

The sizes of paper on which the printer can print are set in its driver. If it won't feed your 12.2 cm x 12.2 cm (I take it that your use of mm was an error) then you should print your Writer page size to a paper size the printer can feed. I would normally print two such pages to an A4 sheet, and afterwards cut them apart.

My apologies Rory, as you said it was meant to be 12.2 cm. OK, I'll try using the next larger size of paper. I'll let you know How I get on. Regards. Brian

Just use the standard paper, be it A4 or US letter. On the Print dialog, select Page Layout tab, and tell that to print two pages to a sheet say your front sheet, and your back sheet, or details of another case. You can also check to print a border about each page, which, if it prints (depends on printer driver - does on some printers, not on others) will give you a cutting line.

Rory, I can't find a Page Layout Tab and I have tried using a standard paper size both with an A4 and an A5 several times. One time, nothing printed at all, another time the 12.2cm x 12.2cm index was enlarged to the size of the paper and another time, just part of it was printed on one corner. Help please. I tried to add a copy of the page I am faced with when I press Print but it is too large to be allowed.

After a lot of wasted paper because none of the smaller paper sizes worked, I tried an A4 and it worked. It would be helpful though if I could use other paper sizes.

The article on Choose advanced print settings on Mac from the Apple support site may be helpful to you.

Thanks for that Robleyd. The Print Dialogue boxes shown on that guide are what I normally use but the Open Office dialogue boxes which come up when I press Print, are not the same.

If you could put your screenshot on a file sharing service, I can download it, change it to meet the size limits of this site and add it here. Alternatively, you could use an image editing program to crop it if necessary and reduce the number of colours to 256; this should make it small enough to upload.

Using the OpenOffice dialogs, go to the Page Layout tab and select 2 pages per sheet (and the draw border... if you wish); then return to the General tab, and press the Properties button; the paper size will have been set to something small, perhaps an envelope size, which might fit your page size; but you want to print two pages to a sheet, so select A4 (or US Letter if in USA) and orientation should be Landcape (usually automatically set by the Page Layout tab).

OK thanks Rory. As I can't find a Page Layout tab, I'll manage using an A4 sheet as I said above. Thanks for your help.

Robeyed, I am having trouble reducing the file size so I will go with the idea of using an A4 sheet as I managed to succeed with. Thanks for your consideration anyway.

In a Mac, one has the choice of using the Mac print dialogs or the OpenOffice print dialogs. My notes were based on use of OpenOffice print dialogs; I don't recollect offhand where is the switch to change to these on a Mac.

As I said, if you can upload the screenshot I can add it here.I'll also PM you with my email in case the option of a file sharing site is not suitable for you.

That's interesting. I didn't know that was possible. I'll have a click around to see if I can find a way. Thanks for that.

Here is the screenshot @brbrown provided:

What options are available if you select More next to OpenOffice Writer? What options are available under the OpenOffice drop down just above?

I doubt that for a CD cover sheet, particularly the back one, that it is necessary to print double-sided.

I think it simpler to switch to the OpenOffice Print dialogs (only switchable on a Mac) and select to print two cover pages on one A4. One can always switch mac to Mac print dialogs if that is preferred for normal use.

Mac FAQ Q35: Why doesn't my print dialog look like examples in posts on the forum?

brbrown wrote:I cannot find how to set the custom size of paper to print it to.
For my MacOS print dialog, the paper size is set in Paper Handling → Destination Paper Size. I have more paper size choices if I select Scale to fit paper Size. The dialog is supplied by the printer driver, so your dialog may be different but will probably offer Paper Handling settings.

If you use the PDF button in the dialog I've shown, you can create a document in that format. When you open the PDF, its printing will be managed by your Mac's Preview application, which may give you other printing choices.

Robleyd. Under More, I see Comments Only. Under Open Office, I see Media and Quality, Layout, Paper Handling, Cover Page, Watermark and Supplies but none of those give any size options.
