How to eradicate a solid horizontal line across the page that seems randomly to assault, and irremovably embed itself in, one particular doc? Thx!

The lines are actually paragraph borders. When you delete the (empty) paragraphs, their border disappears as well. If you delete the first paragraph, the line will also go away.

If you want to keep the text and remove the line, go to Format > Paragraph > Borders > Line arrangement and remove the borders you see configured there.

Make sure the cursor is in the paragraph with the solid line

The solid line originates usually from use of three or more characters, such as ---, or *** (there are others) - to indicate a minor break in text, which might not deserve a chapter break. They are bottom borders of paragraphs. Place your cursor in the text above the unwanted line and /Format /Paragraph : Borders tab. Select the icon to use no border (first icon on left under Line Arrangement) and make sure "Merge with next Paragraph" is unchecked.

Thanks, but this doesn't work. The three+ characters seem a factor but I use them [ ---- ] all the time and only occasionally does the "border" appear and stick.

To be certain that you have selected the paragraph exactly above the text, as it may be a blank line, turn on /View /Non Printing characters. Undoing that selection turns off the non-printing display.

With Non Printing Characters off, still doesn't help or delete the line.

Can you upload the document or a modified version of it that shows the problem? To upload a file, click Post Reply and look for the Upload Attachment tab just below the box where you type a response.

When I open the document and turn on View -> Nonprinting Characters, I see a total of four empty paragraphs and two paragraphs with text. If I select the top three paragraphs (two empty, one with text), right click, select Paragraph, and go to the Borders tab, I can select to have No Borders in the Line Arrangement -> Default section. The thin line across the document then disappears.

Quite so. I see that this works with the attached doc extract -- but it doesn't happen with the orginal doc.

We know you have a problem with paragraph borders and the basic method for cleaning that up has been explained and verified. Without seeing your document, it is hard to give more specific advice.

Saving in the .doc format may be part of the problem as saving in a foreign format can lead to formatting problems. I suggest you save the document in the native odt format and only make a doc version if there is a specific need. But that will not solve the existing problem.

Problem persists in both formats. Must be something in the doc itself, which is rather long (66,000 lines). It's the only doc (of many) in which this problem appears. I selected the whole doc and changed the Paragraph settings as prescribed which had a worse result: multiple lines (up to seven) replacing the one line.

Use the Styles (Paragraph styles, Character styles, etc...) instead of the direct (manual) formatting method. You delete all of the manual formatting properties by usage the CTRL-A, CTRL-M commands.
And use the native ODF file formats.

Select the whole document then select Format > Paragraph > Borders. Uncheck the "Merge with next paragraph" option. When this option is checked, some of the paragraph borders are hidden. All paragraph borders will be shown when the option is unchecked. This will allow you to select all paragraphs with unwanted borders and remove them.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Nowhere in this topic have I seen advice on how to avoid the trouble in the first place. It is caused by the AutoCorrect feature. Use Tools → Autocorrect Options → Options then uncheck Apply Border. Personally, I have unchecked every option there. Use the Help button in the dialog to learn what mischief they do. I refer to the feature as AutoCorrupt.

Yes. Styles are an important concept in OpenOffice. Format → Styles and Formatting may seem as if it takes more time than direct formatting with Format → Character or Format → Paragraph. However experienced OpenOffice users eventually realize that a bit more work at first saves a lot more work later. In this case, if you had formatted with styles, removing all the paragraph borders would be as simple as Edit → Select All then Format → Default Formatting. Those two steps will remove all of your paragraph borders right now, but you will lose your direct formatting. However, that may not be so bad because the sooner you start using styles, the more time you'll save yourself.

Yes. Trying to work with damned DOC format in Writer causes no end of mysterious problems. OpenOffice styles may not save well in that format, for example. If you feel that you must use DOC, the only safe way is to buy/rent Microsnot's Word product.

The extra lines are added when the user creates a new paragraph by hitting Enter in any paragraph which has a bottom border or copies part of any paragraph which has a bottom border and pastes it in a new paragraph elsewhere. The new paragraph in both cases will also have a border. If the "Merge with next paragraph" option is checked, some of those borders will be visible and some will be hidden. It doesn't matter if the initial border was added manually or added by using the AutoCorrect feature.

This works when all text within the multiple lines is deleted then replaced manually. Thanks everyone!

If you wish to use three characters as a scene break, and get a horizontal line, immediately pressing Ctrl Z will undo the autoformat.
