[Solved] Pasted text appears as column

Postby M4x_ » Mon Aug 24, 2020 2:28 am

HI, sorry to bother, this looks like the most similar question related to my issue.
Can I add my question here please ?
I'd like to format pasted text to look as it's been input continuosly.

I apply he filter : Default formatting , which works for the character, not for the spacing.
Pasted text appears as a column and I'm left with a lot of space on the Writer page.
Please help, thank you.

Edit: Split from Paragraph spacing issue as it is a different problem.

My first suggestion is to use the Paste Special (ctrl+Shift+V) and pick the Unformatted text option
OpenOffice 4.1.7, LibreOffice 7.0.1.2 on Windows 7 Pro, Ultimate & Windows 10 Home (2004)

First of all thanks. I tried didn't worked. Did you try it yourself ? It worked ? Maybe I have some options selected and I dunno even which ones.
The text I paste - took it from web - appears as formatted but with horizontal lenght way much lower than what I need to fill my entire writer page.
Hope I explained myself better this time.

Can you upload a document showing the problem. Just a small file will do. To upload a file, click Post Reply and look for the Upload Attachment tab just below the box where you type a response.

I'd guess that the text you have copied has a line break at the end of each line; turn on View | Non-printing Characters or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + F10. Do you see a ¶ (paragraph marker) or a left hooked arrow (line break) at the end of each line?

Yes ctrl+F10 shows all these ¶ ending the lines. I tried search ¶+ substitute (with -space-) to ged rid of them but it didn't worked.
What I'm supposed to do please ?

See this post by RoryOF for one method of removing unwanted paragraph breaks.

You can place the cursor at the beginning of the text after the paragraph mark and use the Backspace key to delete them.

If you want to delete them with Find & Replace:
Select the text you want to affect.
In the Find & Replace dialog put $ in the Search For box
Put a space in the Replace With box
Under More Options, select Current Selection Only and Regular Expressions
Click Replace all.

I suggest you do this on a copy of the document in case something goes wrong.

I wasn't able to delete the ¶ even manually .
''search for $'' & replace with space was my first choice but didn't worked .
I think I'm missing something obvious.

I attach an example as asked .
I also updated OO.

Open the Find & Replace dialog via Edit | Find and Replace or Ctrl+F. In Find enter $; in Replace enter a space; click on the More Options dropdown shown by the red arrow below.

Showing the More Options button

Opening the More Options tab will reveal some more options :D one of which is Regular Expressions as indicated by the red arrow below. Make sure this option is checked.
