Record changes crashes

Postby alanack » Sat Aug 22, 2020 10:22 am

Windows 7, OO v. 4.1.7

I use record changes all day long in my work as an editor, and I've experienced about one crash a day for years when reversing these changes. When going back one character at a time using ctrl + z this program will crash. I can never quite predict when it will happen - sometimes it happens when going back 20 or 30 characters, other times just going back a couple. I make a point to back up the document every couple of minutes, but crashes are somewhat regular, and of course make reversing changes using ctrl + z a little nerve racking. Any thoughts on what might be causing this, or what I could do to prevent it? Thanks!!

I don't use Windows, so what I say may not be appropriate to your case. I have found that grammar checking extensions that are written in Java can sometimes cause instability in OpenOffice with particular files (format sensitive? I haven't checked). If I find that is occurring, I simply disable such extension for that editing session.

Have the files been written originally using Microsoft Word?

Yes, I guess they would be. I copy and paste them from my employer's site. Thanks!

Immediately you have pasted such a file, Save it in .odt format. Then close OO, and reopen. If at some stage you need to send the edited file back to your employer, use /File /Save As to save in word 97/2000/XP format.

Thanks, Rory, I'll give that a try!
