I Don't See WMV Videos in OpenOffice 4.1.7

Postby ArcticStarZX211 » Sun Dec 22, 2019 4:03 am

The computer I use is a Windows 10 gaming laptop. When I insert a WMV video into the Writer, all I see is a gray screen with a silver question mark, as indicated in the photo you see here.

No matter what I try, nothing will fix that problem. Which programs do I need; and if they will solve this problem, how so?

Welcome to the forums.
Writer is a word processing editor, similar to Word or an old fashioned typewriter.
It is not meant for watching videos, though videos of the correct format can be inserted.
Are you trying to insert the video as part of a document or are you just wanting to watch it?
If you're just wanting to watch it, then I recommend getting VLC
If you're trying to insert it and getting this, then verify that the video file is of the correct format. Just because a file has a .wmv extension doesn't mean it's in .wmv format.

Both, perhaps. Why?

Writer is not meant to be a video player.
VLC, which I linked to, is a multi-platform media player.
If you're want to watch the movie/video, VLC is my recommendation.

If you want to insert the video into a document, then the type of file becomes important, as well as the size of the file being inserted.

So let's go over the list o' file types the Writer supports. I mentioned .wmv files. What other file kinds does the Writer support; and if I want to watch the video on the Writer, to which format do I need to convert it?

Even the VLC Media Player doesn't solve the problem.

If VLC doesn't show the videos, then probably the correct codecs are not installed.
