Hi

Im wondering if theres any way you can change the number of words per line
in text

for eg
As we survey, in these two Volumes, the more striking
features of the life stories of men and women who have won
their wav to fame or infamy within a square mile of Charing
Cross, we are impelled to the conviction, that never on the
world's surface, within so constricted an area, has there
been such a magnificent theatre for the display of what is
most efficient in the nations of Europe. Intellectual
luminaries, each of which, in solitary splendour, would
suffice to light its own generation, here shine in a galaxy:

I d like the above to be double the words in each line.... if poss

thanks for help

Welcome to the Forums.
I'm going to guess that you are wanting this in Writer.
Unless you have changed the sizes of the margins to give you a relatively narrow width (ie: 4" or less"), then the only thing I can think of is to use a font that isn't as wide.
It's impossible for me to make suggestions for that, as I don't know what font you are using by default and I don't know what other fonts you have installed on your system.

Basically the number of words per line varies based on the character width, the number of letters in each word, and the left/right margins of the page.

The items that control the number of words per line doesn't change based on where the information is coming from.
You still need to determine the margins and the font. Either or both of these can be attached to the text you downloaded.
As this is text you are downloading, once downloaded, highlight all of the text (Ctrl+A), then press Ctrl+M.
That second control code will remove any extraneous formatting, but your font size is, to my belief, your biggest obstacle

It’s possible that the text has unwanted line breaks- you can use Ctrl + F8 to show paragraph or new line markers. Depending on how many you have, you could manually delete them or use search and replace to change them.

Use Ctrl F8, or /View /Non printing characters or press the backwards P button on the tool bar to see the structure of the file. From Internet archives, it is usual that the files have the original line length of the scanned document; If each paragraph is separated from the next by a blank line (a backwards P on its own), as is frequent from the above sources, then the adjustment is easy.

Only do this if there are blank lines separating paragraphs (the backwards P on its own):

Use /Edit /Find and Replace

In Find, enter ^$, in Replace %%%% (or some string that is not in the document: %%%% has always worked for me). Drop More Options on the F&R window and select "Regular Expressions. Press Replace All
Now
Find $, Replace <enter a space in Replace box>, check that More Options is still showing Regular Expressions selected, Replace all
Now
Find %%%%, Replace \n, check Regular expressions selected, Replace all.

Your document should now expand to fill your pages correctly.

Best to do the above on a copy of the document in case of error.

It will take less than two minutes to do all the above on the largest documents.

I ve just posted my sample up on open office

the font is size 12
I have about a centimetre margin each side of the text and the text is
reaching about half way across

I need to find some tool.... digits per line or words per line or something
to fill in the space

at moment it is about 12 words per line when it could easily be 22 or 23

Upload your sample file to the forum (See [Forum]How to attach a document) so we can analyze the same document you are using.

I have suggested what you can do - it works correctly for me when I download
Men and women of Soho, famous and infamous; by Cardell, John Henry.

If that is what the OP is getting when he turns on /View /non printing characters, showing line-feeds (hooked arrows) rather than Pilcrows (backwards P) at line ends, before he follows my instructions he should use /Edit /Find and Replace
Find \n
Replace \n
drop more options and enable Regular expressions
Then press Replace All.

After that, my instruction sequence will work correctly.

I copied what the OP posted in his post.

If only posters would upload files everything would be so much easier

i can see those funny squiggles at the end of each line they are an arrow pointing back
but cant highlight them
so cannot delete them ...

besides with 200 pages of text I d need some mass way of getting rid of them !

strangely too, there seems to be a dot between every word of the text !

Please do what I said, first of all that in my reply to John_Ha, then in my earlier post.
The dot between each word is non printing, marking a space. Undo /View /non printing characters to turn it off.

What is the point of asking for help if you don't apply the advice given?

Think "replace", not "delete". Try this with a copy of your document: Select Edit > Find & Replace. On the Find & Replace dialog, select More Options and check "Regular Expressions". Type " *\n" without the quotes in the Search for box (note that there is a space before the asterisk). Type a single space in the "Replace with" box, then click "Replace all".

Backspace works well.
