[Solved] Filenames like Charity 2020.ods_0.ods

Files like this appear in my system - what are they?
(also, how do I change the AOO number that appears above? I'm now using 4.1.8)

To change the 4.1.7 in your signature, access your User Control Panel (Slightly below top left of Forum window at bottom of uppermost blue bar), Press Profile Tab, select Edit Signature from the left bar and make any change you wish.

They are spreadsheet files so open them and find out.

I suspect you have typed fred.ods for the filename when saving a spreadsheet not realising that AOO adds the .ods automatically getting fred.ods.ods.

These look like duplicate spreadsheet (Calc) files; I cannot say why they are named that way, other than to suppose they are generated by some form of automatic backup or recovery utility. But I am not a Mac expert, so that is merely speculation.

Rory

Good catch - they are AutoRecovery files. See [Tutorial] How to find and un-delete AOO temporary files
If you were editing fred.odt, then Writer creates an AutoRecovery file called fred.odt_0.odt in the Backup folder.

The default [Windows] backup folder is C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user\backup\ so you ...

If such files are being generated regularly, then you need to review your method of working. You may be allowing the computer to sleep with an OpenOffice file open, or not allowing the few seconds needed for OpenOffice to write its file and housekeeping to the hard drive. There may be other causes.

Thanks to John for explaining it and giving me the wider reference, and to Rory for helping me look at my habits. It's true that I have a few SS that I use a lot and just leave them open all day. I'll have to rethink that.
