[Solved] How to delete formatting symbol on page

Postby DeLaVega1944 » Mon May 10, 2021 4:11 am

I must have hit a control by mistake, but there is a "flashing symbol" that looks like a lower leterr "P" BACKWARDS. As a consequence there dots between every word I type. How do delte his symbol to restore  a clean new page.

Use View | Non-printing Characters or Ctrl+F10 to toggle display of non-printing characters.

Thank you so much. You might be amused and surprised how many tears and knashing of teeth I've suffered over this problem.I just inputed Ctrl+F10, and the offending character disappeared. Thanks again

It is surprising how often this question is asked in various ways, and answered, here.

It is important to stress that this display does not print. Many using Writer for serious formatting will choose to have it on all the time - this can speedily help sort out minor formatting irregularities - but to use it or not is a personal choice.

I'm surprised to see that anybody wants to turn this off.

This is because they are concentrating on appearance, not on content and structure. It takes a while to mentally discount the extra information from the new view. It is like users who expect their document to be onscreen at exactly the same size as the printed output.

I've never been able to get accustomed to that. Can't mentally ignore these marks and must switch this view off.

I find them very obtrusive in the light blue on LibreOffice; I'm used to them in black on OpenOffice, so stay with that.
