Installation went through w/o much problem.

Hello

I have real little experience with R. But I have test the same add on as you. I did not succeed. With openSUSE 11.3 it was possible to work with RKward. I can not tell much more about it.

Hi Romke,

Thanks for your advice.

RKward is the front-end of R, the editor of R. "R and Calc" is the Linux version of RExcel. The latter works on Windows, an Open Source package . I tested it. RExcel takes the data from the spreadsheet, analyzing it and put the result back to the spread sheet. All R functions can be used on the analysis. I'm now looking for a Linux version of similar application. Similarly RBloomberg is an Open Source package it needs Bloomberg to work. I'm now searching on whether it works on Reuters. Or is there a similar package in Open Source to work on Reutesr? Any folk on the forum has input? TIA

Do you use the vanilla version of OOo or the PPA version (since you use 3.2.1)? In latter case, you can try the official version from OOo web site: [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co.

 Edit: Had forgotten that 3.2.1 is the default version in 10.10!

Hi,

Thanks for your advice and URL

I'm running following version:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
OpenOffice.org 3.2.1
OOO320m19 (Build:9505)
ooo-build 3.2.1.4, Ubuntu package 1:3.2.1-7ubuntu1

It comes with Ubuntu 10.10 OS.

Whether you suggest removing it and reinstall OO according to:
[Tutorial] Installing OOo on Ubuntu, Debian and Co.?

Thanks

That is what Hagar suggests. There are minor differences between that version and the Ubuntu version you have installed.

Hi Rory,

Thanks.

I'll remove Ubuntu OO and reinstall the official version. I'll come back afterwards

You have to be certain to remove all traces of the Ubuntu version, otherwise the other version may not install and will complain.

Hello

I think what you want, edit the table in RKward, is not possible. Also not with the vanilla version. When I did test I feed RKward with CSV made by OOo-calc.
I did use a little long way. I did have the tables in a database and made ready the tables with HSQLDB. Load the table in OOo-calc and saved them as a CSV

When you use first this long route then with more experience you find a shorter route.

When you change from Excel to OOo-calc you have first to search to the strong side of OOo. When you work with MSO then Excell is real good to work with data. But when you work with OOo-calc then you have to learn how you can work with a database. This database can even be based on a spreadsheet.

What I did was only for understanding if the same I did for in MSO and SPSS with tools only in LINUX. It was only a one time experience

Your first problem seems me to get a working R version with a working frontend.

Hi Hagar and Rory,

Have removed following packages with Synaptic Package Manager on Ubuntu 10.10

openoffice.org-l10n-en-za
openoffice.org-base-core
openoffice.org-core
openoffice.org-calc
openoffice.org-common
openoffice.org-draw
openoffice.org-emailmerge
openoffice.org-gnome
openoffice.org-gtk
openoffice.org-help-en-us
openoffice.org-impress
openoffice.org-math
openoffice.org-style-human
openoffice.org-writer

openoffice.org-java-common
python-uno

openoffice.org-thesaurus-en-au
openoffice.org-hyphenation-en-us
openoffice.org-hyphenation

uno-libs3
ure
ttf-opensymbol

running "completedly removed (including configuration files)"

Download
OOo_3.2.1_Linux_x86-64_install-deb-US,tar.gz
on:-
http://mirror.lupaworld.com/openoffice/ ... -US.tar.gz

change to the directory of the tarball download and run;
$ tar -vxzf OOo_3.2.1_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz

$ cd OOO320_m18_native_packed-1_en-US.9502/DEBS/
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

$ cd desktop-integration/
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Installation went through without complaint. After finish I got OOo back.

Now I have following problem:-

1)
I need unopkg which was here before.

Please advise which package I have to install to get it back?

2)
I need openoffice.org-java-common

It is necessary otherwise it will complain on running;

unopkg add /path/to/RAddon.uno.pkg

saying "An error occurred while enabling: RAddon.uno.jar"

Please help. TIA

I've never used unopkg but I think I've seen it in /opt/openoffice.org3/program (or something like that).

Make sure that in OOo menu Tools>Options>OOo>Java there is a version checked (wait a while until OOo has scanned the system).

Hi Romke,

Thanks for your advice.

I think I have to make R4Calc (formally known as Add-on) to work on Calc first running on Linux platform. I have RExcel work on Win7. I suppose it can also work on Linux. I'll try when times allows.

I have no urgent need to install a R editor, the front end. Command lines are good to me up to now. I tried "Red-R" before but not success, about 2~3 months ago. Even their forum can't help me. I suppose their package has been improved now. It is a fantastic R editor.

I run all tests on this virtual machine with Oracle VBox as virtualizer which is a powerful PC running AMD X4, 8G RAM and 1T WD Black series HD. I have at least 20 VMs, Windows and Linux, running here. They are NOT all running simultaneously.

I'll come back here when I get R4Calc to work. Thanks

Hi Hagar,

I suppose python-uno provide unopkg according to searching result.

However on running
$ sudo aptitude install python-uno
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  openoffice.org-common{ab} openoffice.org-core{a}
  openoffice.org-style-galaxy{a} python-uno ttf-opensymbol{a} uno-libs3{a}
  ure{a}
0 packages upgraded, 7 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 52.8MB/55.2MB of archives. After unpacking 200MB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  openoffice.org-debian-menus: Conflicts: openoffice.org-bundled which is a virtual package.
  openoffice.org-common: Conflicts: openoffice.org-debian-menus but 3.2-9502 is installed.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

     Remove the following packages:
1)     openoffice.org-debian-menus

Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?]

I select q because it'll remove "openoffice.org-debian-menus"

Make sure that in OOo menu Tools>Options>OOo>Java there is a version checked (wait a while until OOo has scanned the system).

Rserve had some changes on version 0.5, see: http://www.rforge.net/Rserve/ . It seems it causes the problem.
Please, edit this thread's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

Hi hanya,

Thanks for your advice and URL.

I'll clone a new VM to continue my test. Because I can't find unopkg command on OOo Official package. Unless I revert OOo back to Ubuntu version.

I'll come back again after testing. Tks

See that topic for example: [Solved] pdfimport extension on Ubuntu.

I confirm that there is a unopkg script in the folder I mentioned above. Have you tried it? Why look for additional packages? The vanilla version should give all you need.

Hi,

I got it done.

unopkg must be executed inside OOo/program directory as root.

Thanks

Now I have R4Calc, the Add-on, back on Calc. But it still can't work. I think it has problem connecting Rserve.

Problem sorted out as follow;

Procedure

Start Calc

R4Calc -> Launch Rserve
(ignore the warning)
-> OK
-> OK

Start the console

$ telnet localhost 6311
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view

type in the box:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
rnorm(10)

-> Run

Again type:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
cor.test(c(1,2,3,4), c(1,2,2,3))

-> Run

-> Close

2 new spreadsheets, Dump 1 and Dump 2 created.

Thanks

Edit:

Additional question:
Is there a video demo/technical instruction showing how to use "R and Calc", the add-on R4Calc? RExcel has a nice 30 min video demo showing how to use RExcel.

Re: R and Calc problem

Postby r4zoli » Fri Nov 19, 2010 10:44 am

For additional information, my experience with win7, OOo and R.

In past I used R on winXP without any problem, now tried it on win7, and was hard to make running Rserve and OOo together.

R 2.12.0 version installs into directory:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
c:\Program Files\R\R-2.12.0\

The downloaded packages into:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
c:\Users\<username>\Documents\R\win-library\2.12\

I run R and submitted commands in R:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
library(Rserve)
Rserve()

It not starts, gives error on missing R.dll

After some search I find a solution to run Rserve:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
From folder c:\Users\<username>\Documents\R\win-library\2.12\Rserve

copy Rserve.exe and Rserve_d.exe to folder:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
c:\Program Files\R\R-2.12.0\bin\i386\

Create text file Rserv.cfg next to Rserve.exe, with one row content:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
remote enable

Then you can start Reserve from command line or from Total commander:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
R CMD Rserve_d

Now the Rserve is runing, make changes in OOo.
Installed RAddon.uno.pkg with package manager opened a spreadsheet in OOo 3.2.1 and can use R.
I can not start Rserve from R4Calc menu, only manual start help.

In another quirk with OOo 3.3RC5 the R4Calc menu item shows only in English version of OOo, or with OOo with active English UI when multi langpacks installed.
If I use Hungarian or Russian UI settings, the menu is not reachable, possibly it is caused by some changes in OOo 3.3.

Folks I am having a problem getting this to work. I am using OO on Mac OS X.

I downloaded and installed R. And also also installed Rserve. R starts up ok and works. I tried to start Rserve but had the following issue --

> library("Rserve")
> Rserve()
Starting Rserve on port 6311 :
/Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Resources/bin/R CMD /Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Versions/2.15/Resources/library/Rserve/libs/i386/Rserve-bin.so

Fatal error: you must specify '--save', '--no-save' or '--vanilla'

Then from the command line I tried

saleem-mukhtars-imac:scripts saleemmukhtar$ /Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Resources/bin/R CMD /Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Versions/2.15/Resources/library/Rserve/libs/i386/Rserve-bin.so --save

Type 'demo()' for some demos, 'help()' for on-line help, or
'help.start()' for an HTML browser interface to help.
Type 'q()' to quit R.

Rserv started in daemon mode.

So Rserv seems to be running.

There was a problem when I tried to install the RCalc package.

saleem-mukhtars-imac:oopkg saleemmukhtar$ unopkg add RAddon.uno.pkg

ERROR: JNI exception occurred
Exception details:
(com.sun.star.uno.RuntimeException) { { Message = "JNI exception occurred", Context = (com.sun.star.uno.XInterface) @3c9ca64 (ImplementationName = "com.sun.star.comp.stoc.JavaVirtualMachine") } }

unopkg failed.

But it seems to have been installed. When I start Open Office I see the R4Calc menu item but everything is greyed out.

Any pointers would be helpful. Thanks in advance,
