[Solved] OpenOffice won't start on Slackware 14.0

Postby uselessbox » Mon Sep 02, 2013 7:23 am

So I can't get Open Office 4.0 to launch on my notebook running Slackware 14.0. I used the .RPMs from the official website and ran:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
su -
rpm2txz *.rpm
installpkg *.txz

I didn't get any errors on installation, but OOo won't launch. when I try to run OOo from the command line, I get:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
shaft@Slackbook:/opt/openoffice4/program$ ./soffice
./soffice: line 88: /opt/openoffice4/program/pagein: No such file or directory
./soffice: line 102: /opt/openoffice4/program/javaldx: No such file or directory
./soffice: line 123: /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice.bin: No such file or directory

When I look in the opt/openoffice4/program/ directory, all 3 of those files are there. What am I missing?

I don't see the problem either. In that situation, I try to follow the error message even if it's not making sense.

Just to double-check, could you copy & run the command below, exactly, and see what you get?

ls -l /opt/openoffice4/program/pagein; /opt/openoffice4/program/pagein

Show us the lines from your terminal session if it's still not working.

Thanks, I poked around a little more, with no luck.

Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view

bash: /opt/openoffice4/program/pagein: No such file or directory

Looks normal--just like the one I have installed (on Fedora). I'm wondering how the file can be there yet be reported missing when you try to run it.

I'm stumped; maybe there's a Slackware guy here that has another suggestion. Sorry!

 Edit: PS:
A bit of Googling confirmed one thing I was wondering about: if the executable depends on some library, and that library is missing, you get a report that the main executable file is missing and not the specific library. I'm not sure what is the best way to track down all the library dependencies; I can give you a list from mine if you want it.

Also, I see that this situation can arise when you try to run a binary for an unsupported architecture: a 32-bit binary on a 64-bit system without the necessary 32-bit support.

I suggest asking on a Slackware forum, as someone there may have run into this problem.

Edit: There is earlier discussion on an install on Slackware in this thread

Thanks for the suggestions. After searching through the Slackware forums, I stumbled upon a Slackware pkg made by Niki Kovacs:

After uninstalling and reinstalling from that pkg everything worked perfect. Still not sure what the issue with the first installation was, but bottom line... it's working now :)
