Issues with installing under all versions of MS Windows

OpenOffice will not open

Postby maiduguri » Mon Nov 23, 2020 4:31 pm

Hello
I have windows 10 on my Dell laptop, and have been using Apache OpenOffice for several years.  Recently, I reset my laptop, and when I reinstalled all the programs I had on my machine prior to the reset, everyone worked except for openoffice. I have googled this problem, and one suggestion is as follows :

Re: openoffice will not open. You might have a hung OpenOffice process. Open the task manager by pressing the three keys CTRL Shift ESC simultaneously. On the Processes tab (called Details in Windows 10), look for processes called soffice and kill them. Then try OpenOffice again

I don't see a process called "soffice" in task manager, so does anyone have any other suggestion?

There's a possibility of a hidden process.
The easiest way to ensure that this is not the case is to do a system reboot.

Hi Russell

If, as you suggest, the problem maybe a hidden process, where would I find that? Do I need to install windows 10 O.S, or is it in my data files?

I have both a "My folders" and a full image of my pc backup in the cloud with Acronis, so if the problem is with the O.S., I can wipe the hard drive, recover the data files from the cloud, and manually reinstall the programs.

Start TaskManager (Ctrl Shift Esc) and kill any soffice processes shown on TM's tabs.

Are you trying to start OpenOffice by doubleclicking a file, or by starting it from the Start button /Programs, and if it starts, then opening a file?

It makes no difference whether I click on the openoffice icon on start, or the icon on my desktop. It will not open

Update this information.

Start Windows in safe mode and check if the problem occurs.

To start windows in safe mode I apparently need the Bitlocker recovery key, and I don't have that. Dell support have informed me that the only way to find the Bitlocker recovery key is to perform an OS reinstallation, which I don't really want to do.

My pc required the Bitlocker recovery key, which I don't have. I contacted Dell UK support who said that the only way to find the key was to proceed with O.S.reinstallation. I did now want to do that, so I contacted Dell US and asked them to take control of my pc. He found the key, went into safe mode and open office worked. Once back in normal mode the program again refused to open. US support had control of my pc for over two hours, but finally got openoffice to work. The line then dropped before I could ask what the problem was, so I have emailed them.

Anyway, thank you for your interest.

If OpenOffice ran in Windows Safe Mode, t hat suggests the problem was caused by some other program or driver that runs in Windows Normal Mode. Usual culprits are antivirus, malware or firewall programs.
