[Solved] Wrong math symbols in OO

Postby podosinovik » Wed Jun 19, 2013 8:24 am

Hi, everyone.

I need to open a bunch of doc files in OO. Every file has several equations of MathType 5.0 and I have troubles with them.
I now that Math conversion goes nice with MathType up to 3.5 but what can I do in this situation?

I have a Win 7 32bit SP1 system and a fresh install of OO 3.4.1 and MathType 6.9. I checked convert from and to Math from MathType
in options.

When conversion is ok, equation looks ok too but when mathtype object is not converted it looks different then in MathType editor
when embeded in OO editor. Here are examples:

Word

test-word.png (3.9 KiB) Viewed 6723 times

OO
test-oo.png
test-oo.png (3.98 KiB) Viewed 6723 times

In this case it looks like the symbol "=>" can't not be handled properly in the first equation while everything is ok with the second one.
By the way I checked the font "OpenSymbol" it's installed in the system.

So what are my options to open that pack of doc files in OO?

Can you upload your (reduced filesize) example *doc and *.odt files with these equations?

Both formulas display as expected on my system. I tested with OOo 3.3.0 and also with Lotus Symphony 3.0.1.

I don't have Apache OO 3.4.1 installed where I am right now, sorry!

Incorrect for me (first occurrence) on AOO 4.0 (dev version)
Apache OpenOffice 4.1.7 on Xubuntu 20.04.1 (mostly 64 bit version) and very infrequently on Win2K/XP

"General OLE error" when I have clicked on first Equation in my LO3.6.4.3, or LO4.0.2 portable, or AOO3.4.1
And i get error message too, when I click on first Equation in my (Hungarian) MS Word 2002.

Google translator:
(The server program, or an entity in the source file is not found.
Check for proper installation of the program, and that has not been deleted, renamed, moved.)

The second Equation work fine in all of listed Office programs.

Which program was your document created with? AOO, LO, or MSO

It looks like the first formula is a "MathType" object while the second is a "Microsoft Equation editor" object (integrated tool in MS Office).

You need MathType installed to work with MathType objects. When it is installed, MathType will also catch objects from the Equation editor.

MathType works with OpenOffice/LibreOffice too, so if OOo's builtin translation doesn't work, you could try installing MathType. If that is not an option, you could try to disable the automatic conversion when opening in Writer.
Tools - Options - Load/Save - Microsoft Office
There may be an image object that will be used as a "fallback" when mathtype is not available.

AFAIK the original MS equation editor was also a stripped down MathType. The OOo conversion refers to those objects by that name.

I've copy-pasted this equations from my documents which are not really mine ) but I guess they were created in MS Word for 99.9% sure.

I have installed an evaluation copy of MathType and it doesn't help. Whether I switch automatic conversion on or off the second equation
is always MathType embeded object and it rendered wrong on OO edit screen (at the same time it's ok when I click on it and MathType
editor window popup).
Fallback to image is not an option as I want so keep the possibility to edit equations.

As it is also confirmed in the upcoming Apache version (RoryOF's developer build), I suspect that it is something that came about when Apache took over.
Possible solutions (install other office suite):
  • You could try reverting to the legacy version 3.3.0 (which I prefer, and which displays everything as expected, but you have to uninstall AOO 3.4.1 first).
  • A better solution for many users is LibreOffice (which will sit nicely alongside AOO 3.4.1, if needed).
  • I find the interface of Lotus Symphony a bit clunky. Worth a try, though. It loads fast, and the tabbed interface is preferred by many (often requested).

Regardless of which one you choose, it looks like you need the full MathType addon to enable editing for the first object. (The second one opens without MT.)
According to the Design Science website, MathType is also supported in Symphony.
