[Solved] Vertical Text and Circles and Ovals tools

Postby smiooth » Sat Aug 11, 2012 8:47 pm

Using V3.4
I can't get Vertical Text tool to show up on the toolbar either in Draw or in Impress when I select it as a Visible Button.
And, I can get Circles and Ovals tools to show up in Impress but not in Draw.
Had the same toolbar problems with V3.2. What am I doing wrong ?

Thanks
Bill

Hi and welcome to the forum!

See: [Solved] Formatting toolbar buttons disappeared!.

Please add '[Solved]' at the beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Ok. Partial success.
I now have the Vertical Text tool on the toolbar of both Draw and Impress.

Followed this as suggested:
"Check the CTL option Tools > Options > Language Settings > Languages > Enhanced language support: Enabled for complex text layout (CTL). Then you should be able to add the related buttons in the toolbar"
However, in my Options dialog, The CTL options for enhanced language support in my Options dialog are two check boxes:
* Show UI elements for east Asian writings
* Show UI elements for Bi-Directional writing
I had to check them both to get Vertical Text.

I still don't have Circles and Ovals in Draw. And more interesting, Circles and Ovals have now disappeared from the Toolbar list under the Draw View menu (they were on the list before). Impress is fine, still showing the Circles and Ovals icons on the toolbar.

Don't you have the toolbar at bottom left?

My cursor is on the Ellipse button.

Yes, I do have the Drawing toolbar as you show.

What I can not get are the 'Circles and Ovals' tools in OO Draw. But I can get them in OO Impress. The image below shows my OO Impress page with 'Circles and Ovals' tools.

I'm not 100% sure, but it looks like maybe Draw doesn't have the 'Circles and Ovals' tools available as a group.

I have access to what looks like the same tools, in Draw, through the "Circles and Ovals toolbar"--which is not really a toolbar and is labeled "Ellipse" in the list of toolbar items. Yeesh.

See Customize Toolbar > Add > Category: Drawing; Commands: Ellipse (check the description at the bottom to make sure you select the "toolbar" menu and not the simple button.

Well done.
Was searching for the arc feature few days ago and couldn't find it! Strange that the default button is not the menu one.

It used to be. They changed it to make the UI simpler, maybe somewhere around OOo 3?

Yes, I see it.
In the customize Drawing Commands list there are TWO entries labeled "Ellipse".

The first "Ellipse" is described as the "Circles and Ovals" toolbar.
The second "Ellipse" is described as the standard ellipse/circle tool.

And now I have it! A new button labeled "Ellipse" at the bottom left of my Draw page which opens the Circles and Ovals tools. See pic. And they work.

Thanks much for the help.

You can remove the other icon BTW, to avoid cluttering the toolbar.

Actually, this problem has **not** been solved in AOO v.4.1.1

The former solution of checking the CTL checkbox under Tools > Options > Language to enable the vertical text icon in the drawing toolbar does not work in this version on Lubuntu 15.04

The problem that has been persistent throughout the past 3-4 versions of AOO has not been solved. Any other solutions for this problem? Or has AOO completely given up fixing any problems from here on out? I have to believe since there are updates that ppl writing the code must know about this on-going problem.

I don't want to report this problem as "bug" only to be told that it has been solved because it has most assuredly NOT been.

Sorry, one thing I don't understand here: how is text made with the vertical text tool any different than regular text, rotated 90°

PS: The vertical text tool works as described, running AOO 411 on Fedora Linux.

PPS: The option that works for me is:
Tools > Options > Language Settings > Languages > Enhanced language support > Show UI elements for East Asian writings: ON

@acknak: That is exactly what I have checked in v.4.1.1 The problem is that the shortcut in the Drawing toolbar in Writer for Vertical text keeps disappearing on my OS -64-bit Lubuntu 15.04. This was an on-going issue throughout v.3. I suppose I can rotate the text manually, I'm not sure. I have to check. The shortcut to this feature was very convenient. It works on my Win7 partition in AOO 4.x
