Of course the information is in the paragraph! A word processor handles a text flow, not a pages (as an self-existing concept like a presentation).
So there is no other possibility. This is not unnecessary formatting at all.

Sorry, there is no direct way to set the page number on any specific page to be a specific number.

The only way to set the page number is to insert a page break that includes a specific page style, and then you can also set the page number for the new page.

As Hagar pointed out, that is all included in the paragraph properties: Format > Paragraph > Text Flow > Breaks

Thanks for the help. :)
I've spent the last 20 years working with graphics and page layout programs, so this is all a bit weird.

Adding a page number field to the footers is fine, but they don't give a simple option to set the page number, that from what I've read is buried in paragraph and page break formatting
Is there a strait forward/easy way to add page numbers that start with a specific number?
I am working with a 24 page blank book layout, and am trying not to muck it up with all kinds of unnecessary formatting.
Insert > Manual Break > Page > Select new style> set page number

You need to have different page styles. They can be identical as long as the Style names are different.

If you are using default page style just right click on it, choose new and give it a new name.

Select Page Break and then choose Front Material from the Style drop down menu.
Select the Change page number check box and set the page number to be 1.
Click OK.

You will have a new page.
There seems to be a problem with this step. When I insert the break I see two pages on screen but on the status bar it says page 1/3.

A third page appears out of nowhere. :?:

Make sure the page style is not a Right page (Page layout field of the Page tab in the page style properties.

I don't think that's it. Page 1 is First Page and page 2 a Default Page.

For now I have found this solution.
  • Tools
  • Options
  • OpenOffice.org Writer
  • Print
  • Uncheck mark from Print automatically inserted blank pages
That removes the invisible blank page from the pdf. I' m still trying to figure out if there's a way to do the same in Writer.

But page number will still take into account the blank page.

Hmmm, it appears that there are still problems. That extension doesn't seem to work with different page styles. Damn...

Better understand how it works instead of using macros that do it for you. Else, no chance to handle more complex layouts as you've just discovered...

NB: the extension is mentioned in the tutorial for the record!

I don't know why everyone gave a complicated explanation for this - the version of OpenOffice I'm currently using allows one to make this edit very easily (perhaps it is a newer version that made it easier, than the one these posters were using at the time).

When inserting a page number, via

> Insert
> Fields
> Page Number

In the dialogue box that comes up, you simply enter -1 into the 'Offset' bar. This means that a page number won't appear on the first page, and will start the count from the second page. If you put -2, it will start on the 3rd, if you put -3 it will started on the 4th page, etc etc.

Easy!

The offset feature is not a good method for such a situation: if you insert a ToC, the numbering will be wrong.
You have to use page styles and that's all.

Update your ToC and you will find that the page numbers listed there most probably do not correspond with the page numbers shown on the pages. The hyperlinks will work correctly. It is possible that with a small offset (-1) numbers may align correctly, but with a multiple paged ToC or large numbers of front matter pages the numbering between ToC and actual pages will go out of sync when using an offset.

The offset is a pointer to a different page, not an offset of the page number of the current page. An offset of -1 tells Writer to insert the page number of the preceding page. Since there is no page preceding the first page, no number is inserted. Try setting the offset to 1. This tells Writer to insert the page number of the following page. In this case, no page number appears on the last page.
