Hi

I got such strange problem.

Heres how it is. I got 1 file with presentation in ppt format. In open office 2.4.1, when i run this file it takes few seconds to 'import it', and it works fine...But in OO 3.0 it takes about 5 minutes to import the same file. I tried Sun version, Novell version (now im using Novells 2.4.1), Go OO version (all 3.0). In every of them this file imports so slow.


What could be the cause of this?

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Stranfge indeed.

Once you have it imported, try saving it as OOo format. Then use/work with that version until you need to share it with anyone else, then save a version in .ppt format or PDF.

That could do the trick...but it will be annoyng, if for example ill need to just check some info from MS Office files, and ill need to wait few mins to have it imported...

I think as for now ill stay with OO 2.4.1



Ill leave it 'un solved' for a while, maybe someone will have some more ideas

OO 3.0 needs 30-60 Sek to import a .doc (Word2000) file.
Saving taked the same time.

OO 2.4 has been much faster.

Why is OO 3 so slow???

I also have one (very large) file that is about 10sec to import n v2.4.2, and 5min on v3.0. It's something about that file, and I don't know what, because all other files are fine.

Its every .doc file here.
Even very small files...

I think i will switch to OO 2.4 again.

if there is no way to accelerate 3.0 - does anyone know a link to the former 2.4.2 german?

Loading of program lasts and lasts and lasts ... and i don´t really see markable advantages - at least not for my usage. V. 2.4 will do it for me - back to the roots.

For german language only V.3 is available (italian still can obtain 2.4)

BUT - fortunately i found a 2.4.1 on a stick - and now happy user of oos again

Also if u want to update from 2.4.1 u will get a message saying that update from "Die Internetverbindung zu update24.services.openoffice.org konnte nicht hergestellt werden." is not possible.

I notice that the link I just posted now for the German version is slightly different to yours. Your link led me to an empty page (even if add the part of that link that is not formatted as URL in your post). Try the above and see how you go.

I too am finding OO3.0 very slow. A PowerPoint presentation not only loads slowly but also runs VERY slow.
Can't recall seeing this probelm in OO2.4.1 but can't be certain now.

ok, i switched back to OO 2.4.2 now.

Same problem here on my Windows XP SP2/3 computers... very very slow... like 5 minutes to load a file, taking up to 400 megs of ram and 90% CPU all the time, effectively halting the computer.
Seems to work better under Vista, but my Vista comp is a beast - E8400 /w 4gb RAM so maybe that's the reason.

Also comparing 2.4.2 and 3.0 on the comp - cold boot is about the same... i.e. 5-10 sec. but warm boot is instantaneous for 2.4 (i.e. < 1 sec) and approx. 4 sec. for 3.0... hrrrmmmmm

Seems to work okay under linux tho...


Switching the windows comps back to 2.4
