How does OpenOffice compare to Microsoft Office?

Is suggest you to compare the LibreOffice and the MSO.

Document interoperability is ensured by the use of open standards. ODF is one of them (AOO/LO default format), it is ISO-certified. OOXML (MS Office .docx...) is not really one. There is one flavor that has been ISO certified but MS Office use a custom flavor that still relies on old features not really documented IIRC.

You would be better off using LibreOffice instead of OpenOffice. There are several good reasons for this some which are given here:
