[Poll] Pasting content (pictures) from web

Post by Hagar Delest »

I thought about creating a poll before submitting an enhancement request, first to be sure of the users opinion, second to gain some time if it has to go through the Q&A user experience team.

So here is the problem:
  • When you paste a selection containing pictures from your web browser, Writer downloads the pics and it can take some time. It can even fail depending on the address of the pics.
  • As the pics are linked (to their web location), each time the document is opened, OOo has to retrieve again the files.
  • The pics are not embedded in the document, they can't be seen by someone offline.
Proposal:
  • Embed the pictures in the document by default (when pasting from an external source like the web browser).
  • If someone actually wants to link the pics, he still can do that by accessing the Picture tab of the pic properties and paste the link in the appropriate field (and that should remove the embedded file).
I think that 99% users would like to have the pics embedded, do you agree?

Note that if you change your mind afterwards, you can also change your vote.

BTW, it could fix the following bug: Issue 77322 - Copy & Paste from website crashes OOo Writer 2.2.
Edit: In fact, it seems there is already issues about that, the closest seems to be that one: Issue 37652 - set default options for pasting images from HTML content (embed graphics instead of linking them)

I feel very strongly that instead of copying from web pages people should save those pages entirely to their HD and do the copying off line. That saves a lot of trouble. There are so many issues that need fixing, this one is just not important enough, even if it pops up frequently.

Takes too much clicks and too much time IMHO. You've to remember where it has been saved and delete it afterwards. And I wouldn't download a whole page for a single pic for example.

For me the best is to give user the choice in preference. But anyway i think the "default" is stock image on HD...

You mean option 1 (according to your vote), i.e. look at the pic in the cache on HD, not download it. Your sentence could imply that you agree with floris v (first save the page on HD).

Do any browsers other than IE on Windows make the cache available to other applications? I guess it would be nice if OOo could use if when it is available.

I most often need the image embedded, so it would save me some clicks if that were the default.

For a single image, Right mouse has a Copy Image, or Save Image, and other options.

HHTRACK will download an entire site.

My opinion here is the same as with other similar issues [aside form copyright], in that I much prefer to use as many steps as necessary to be in control. That is, I'd rather save an image to edit and then insert into a document, keeping a copy until I deem it necessary to abandon it. I don't like scanning straight into a document, for example, but using an image editor to do that, then edit as necessary, then save, then insert into the document. Perhaps an old habit from things going wrong and not wanting to go through the entire procedure again.

No such choice in Firefox if the pic is not the only content displayed on the page.

Of course but many users (including me sometimes) just need a quick and easy way to keep the information without any special embellishment or rework.

Never heard of it but you can post in the macro forum here, I'm sure it's not so difficult.

:?: :?:
There certainly is that option in my Firefox. However, maybe it depends on whether the image in the web page is protected against copying. (Most pay-per or subscription clipart sites, for example, protect their images and even pop a warning if you try to save something that way. I haven't tried seeing what would happen if I saved a website or used the ScrapBook extension. I would hope those methods could be similary blocked, because the material is copyrighted unless specifically posted as open domain.)
Cheers!

Here are some screenshots (based on your avatar):
Simple right click on the pic (nothing selected).

Right click after the pic has been selected.

Sorry, it's in French but the 'Copier' entry (for Copy) is only available if the pic has been selected.

Interesting. It must be a difference in the French distro, or maybe some add-on affects the behavior. A single right-click on your avatar (no other previous selection) does give me the copy command:
