Thanks all for your help and support - however apparently this problem is unresolvable at this time - at least for me since no matter what I've tried I couldn't get it to work.

For now - it back to OO 2.4 and wait for the next release of OO3.

Thanks again!

No, you're in the main installation folder here, not in the user profile (Documents and settings\<username>\Application data\OpenOffice.org3).

Well, since the problem is still being hashed out between Hagar and juanon, perhaps it's too soon to conclude anything.

Also, an issue should not be marked Solved unless the thread contains a solution to the problem... it's a flag to let people know when they're scanning topics that there is at least one fix inside.
Cheers!

Well, the fix is to keep working with 2.4.1. But hardly a fix, I agree. There are other threads about the dictionaries with the Beta version and others seem to have made it working, that's why I continue here with juanon. We are missing something here. All the pieces are here but we don't put them in the right order I'm sure.

I feel pauliw25 doesn't want to continue investigating and I understand, it's not really an user friendly issue. But I hope we'll fix it with juanon and perhaps we'll find out what has lost pauliw25. Then that will be a true [Solved] tag!

I fear I'll have to install the Beta on my W2k system (which I tried to avoid) to see how it works exactly, compared to my xubuntu box.

Hi Hagar,

I have RHEL 5 and OO3.b2 and have the same issue.
I've been following this thread and trying the suggestions along the way.
No advancement.
Happy to be your ticket out of having to install on W2K.

Cheers,
tc.

Please check that thread first and create another thread if there is still an issue, there are already 2 discussions in this thread: [Solved] OOo 3.0 Beta 2 dictionaries management.

As has been pointed out above - I should not have marked this as solved - until it was truly solved . Therefore, I will be removing the solved notation and will continue to monitor this thread.

Sorry if I offended anyone.

OK, no, there is no dict-en.oxt extension folder in the user profile.

So first remove the extension with admin rights. Then with your standard user account install it again from OOo.

Thanks, but no luck.

Reinstalling the extension does not create the dictionary, thesaurus and hyphenation files. Adding those in manually works for all but the thesaurus. And still nothing under the user profile.

It means that you've installed in the main installation folder (for all users) instead of your user only. But it doesn't matter in fact. So let's continue with current installation.

Can you upload here the content of your dictionary.xcu file (in the extension folder)? and the linguistic.xcu file in your user profile?

There is no dictionary.xcu but there is a dictionaries.xcu (not trying to split hairs, just trying to be accurate so you and/or others can help solve my problem! :)

The dictionaries.xu is located only in the C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 3\share\uno_packages\cache\uno_packages\6C.tmp_\dict-en.oxt folder and it has the following content:

You're right, indeed. Better be precise here anyway.

That's the problem I think! You should have one in your OOo user profile \Documents and settings\<username>\Application data\user\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office. Its content should be the same as the one above but location should point to the right folder:

Code: Select all

    <prop oor:name="Locations" oor:type="oor:string-list">
     <value>vnd.sun.star.expand:$UNO_SHARED_PACKAGES_CACHE/uno_packages/6C.tmp_/dict-en.oxt/th_en_US_v2.dat</value>
    </prop>
Make sure the folder name (6C.tmp_) is correct (for all the lines where it appears BTW). I think it should be 8F.tmp_ according to your last screenshot, except if you've reinstalled meanwhile. Try to edit also the linguistic.xcu file above to correct the paths.

If it doesn't work, you should try to remove the extension with admin rights and install it for your user only, then the dict-en.oxt folder will be in the user extensions. Rename the one in the folder C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 3\share\uno_packages\cache\registry\com.sun.star.comp.deployment.configuration.PackageRegistryBackend\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office.

I did another clean install before replying yesterday, hence the folder change. The paths seem correct in the linguistics.xcu I posted yesterday, but I notice that in the linguistics.xcu file in my documents and settings folder there are no path statements like that. Is this file correct?

I'll wait to see what you have to say about the linguistics.xcu from my documents and settings folder before trying this (again)!

Thanks!

Yes, the file seems correct, mine is similar, no path.
I'm rather lost with your case. I hope that installing for the user only will improve it!

Hi everyone. I have parsed through this thread - and I honestly didnt get a whole lot out of it. I am a new OOO3 Beta user ( Build 9328) and I am using XP SP 2 that has all current patches short of SP3. Everything is underlined red and I have done all the checks and re-imports of dictionaries and so forth, but nothing seems to work and I am right back where i started.

So, just have a simple question. Is there a fix for the spellchecking issues that anyone knows of, and if not, who is the proper entity to contact to suggest a fix for this issue?
Additionally, is there any info that I can provide to help the cause? This is something that should work "out of the box" so to speak. Is like getting a new car with no doors or windshield. You can drive it, but its quite uncomfortable to use :roll:

Thanks for all your efforts.

Best Regards,
The Phoenix. :ugeek:

You should start a new thread. For most people of course it does work out of the box. But remember that a beta (even a beta 2) is still only a beta - why not use 2.4.1 until OOo 3.0 is officially released in a few months? Beta's aren't intended for prodction work.

There appears to be a relevant issue filed in the Issue Tracker: 92255. I've posted a link there to this thread... obviously wasn't sure what format to post it in, but it's at least there. If you want to vote for the issue or add to it, you'll need to register there first. You get five votes to spend on Writer, and up to two to spend on a single issue.

I agree with TheGurkha, though, that it's best to use the current stable version. It doesn't exhibit that behavior at all. Beta versions are still in testing and development, and are bound to have bugs... they're just not usually this visible. ;)
Cheers!

I was having the same issue with a clean install of 3.0 beta 2 (build 9328) under Windows XP.

juanon's solution posted above on 2008-08-06 fixed things for me.

Regarding issue 92255 in the issue tracker: This seems to be written specifically to the UK. The topic of this thread, however, appears to be specific to US English, and as juanon described, appears to be the result of 2 missing files (en_US.dic and en_US.aff) in the supplied extension ("English spelling and hyphenation dictionaries and thesaurus", version 20051213). I'm thinking a new issue should be opened to address this specific issue?

Based on other comments here, it appears that some users upgrading from an existing version don't run into the issue. If this issue doesn't get properly tracked and receive some attention, I foresee it becoming much more visible as more users start downloading the 3.0 version and discover that spell checking is "broken".

Also, linking to http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/ ... f=6&t=8029 ("OOo 3.0 Beta 2 dictionaries management") mostly for my reference as it's a lot of related discussion.

I make no assumptions about where the people who post here are from, since not everyone supplies theirfo location details. Because the missing-files approach wasn't working for everyone, I saw this issue as quite a likely alternative, at least worth exploring.

It seems more people don't run into the issue than do. It's certainly not "broken" on my Vista machine. I didn't upgrade that beta, I did a clean install. No problems on XP either, but I did upgrade that installation from Beta1 to Beta2.
Cheers!

I have similar problems with dictionary and thesaurus. The posts above solved my dictionary issue, but I am still having trouble with the thesaurus. A clue (?) that I didn't see mentioned is that I can switch my language, in the thesaurus dialog box, from English (USA) to English (UK) and it works as expected.

My dictionaries.xcu contains

Code: Select all

<node oor:name="ThesDic_en-US" oor:op="fuse">
            <prop oor:name="Locations" oor:type="oor:string-list">
                <value>%origin%/th_en_US_v2.dat</value>
            </prop>
            <prop oor:name="Format" oor:type="xs:string">
                <value>DICT_THES</value>
            </prop>
            <prop oor:name="Locales" oor:type="oor:string-list">
                <value>en-US en-ZA en-GB</value>
            </prop>
        </node>
Which seems to link the locale to the thesaurus. Is there someplace else to check?

Just noting that I had the same problem installing this morning. I have Win XP SP2 and have OO2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 and 3.0 beta 1 in place when I installed. 3.0 beta 2 replaced 3.0 beta 1 which I have been using with only minor issues noted in Impress and Writer to date, but didn't want to report for beta 1 now that beta 2 is out there. I had put off installing beta 2, which I had previously downloaded, but I finally re-downloaded yesterday, installed this morning and have the same problem with the auto-spellcheck in English US.

I went to the cited issue 92255 and left a comment there. I think this may be more prevalent than some comments here seem to think. I think anyone who downloads the beta out of curiosity and finds this state of affairs would simply return to the stable version and wait for this to be resolved. Certainly, even for beta use, no one would rely upon their own spelling to accept or reject items and only very motivated users would wade through these forums to find the issue solutions posted here.

So yeah, it needs looking into.

I wanted to check the functions I was having trouble with in Impress, but for now, have real work to accomplish and can't spend the time to trouble shoot, so will go back to 2.41 for now.

RC1 is for the first release candidate of 3.0: OpenOffice 3.0 schedule?

I have had the problem a few times. This time I chose to find and fix the problem. I posted my solution here:

Your mileage may vary. My post is on page 4...

@ (especially) pauliw25 & juanon: I've found out that there is in fact another linguistic.xcu file in the user profile (similar to the one in the main installation folder, I should have thought about that!).

See my update here. Perhaps that one must be edited. Mine looks like that (only for the en-US spell check section), make sure paths are correct:

Code: Select all

   <node oor:name="HunSpellDic_en-US" oor:op="fuse">
    <prop oor:name="Format" oor:type="xs:string">
     <value>DICT_SPELL</value>
    </prop>
    <prop oor:name="Locales" oor:type="oor:string-list">
     <value>en-US</value>
    </prop>
    <prop oor:name="Locations" oor:type="oor:string-list">
     <value>vnd.sun.star.expand:$UNO_USER_PACKAGES_CACHE/uno_packages/QXbWvG_/dict-en.oxt/en_US.aff vnd.sun.star.expand:$UNO_USER_PACKAGES_CACHE/uno_packages/QXbWvG_/dict-en.oxt/en_US.dic</value>
    </prop>
   </node>
