[Issue] Missing objects and footers
[Issue] Missing objects and footers
I have been editing a document for a few months with no problems. The doc has quite a few objects which are sets of cells from Open Office Calc. Until today they were displayed with no problems. Now, all of a sudden many (not all) of them appear as a box with the text "Object nn", where nn is a number, and a picture of an AC plug. I have already tried Tools-Options-View and everything there is already checked.
An earlier version of the file looks fine.
My OS is Windows 2000 and I am using version 3.2.0 of OO.
I have also just noticed that my footers no longer have the chapter names or page numbers in them - just what look like place holder text "Chapter" and "Page numbers"

Hi Hagar,
I will be sure to do that. The issue is not completely solved yet.

Re: Missing objects and footers
I have the same problem with objects no longer showing, in my case it is equations and tables that is replaced by a picture of a plug and the text Object NN. I have tried the suggested solution without luck.

Re: Missing objects and footers
Can you upload a sample file (see: How to attach a document here)?

Re: Missing objects and footers
Has it been created from OOo or does it come from a MS Word document?

Re: Missing objects and footers
Equations made with OOo Math or the MS Equation editor? Tables inserted from a Calc file? By copy/paste or from the Insert>Object menu?

Re: Missing objects and footers
Only Equations in the sample file. In the original file there was tables from Calc inserted by copy/paste I think but I'm not sure since it has been some time.
Equations made by Insert>Object>... (Not sure what it's called in the English version)

Re: Missing objects and footers
Well, can't say what happened...
There is no folder for the OLE objects in the file (ODF is a zip archive in fact, with xml files inside, together with the pics and external objects like OLE). You can try to file a report and attach your file there: [Tutorial] Reporting bugs or suggestions.

Thank you for your time. I will try to report it tomorrow, at the moment i have to rewrite everything so I can hand it away this week.

Re: Missing objects and footers
Hi, exactly the same problem here: when I edit a document with many OLE-objects, and save it, some of objects disappear. They show only placeholders like "Object NN" (screenshot here).
I've tried Go-oo version (from Debian repository) and vanilla 3.2.0 from official web site. Same results.
Example files: before, after
Steps to reproduce: open file, edit every second formula or table on first 10 pages, save, repeat editing, save. Close document, open document.

Re: Missing objects and footers
I can reproduce the problem with 3.2, but not with the newer snapshots--at least, not so far.
As far as I can tell, all of the data is still in the file. I wonder what's causing them to display as "missing"?

Wow! What was I looking at?As far as I can tell, all of the data is still in the file.
The original file has 1221 sub-files in the document archive; the "after" file has 225! The others are missing entirely. No wonder it doesn't work.
Unbelievable bug. I think this is the one: Issue 110692: Sheet lost in incorporated Calc OLE
Good thing it's already fixed--what a cock-up. Maybe this is one reason they decided to put out a 3.2.1 bugfix.

Re: Missing objects and footers
The file size should have alerted you, Acknak! The before file was about 650KB, the after file about 200KB. I think its OK on OOo 3.2.1 RC1

Re: [Issue] Missing objects and footers
Thank you for quick answer. I've updated OOo to 3.2.1-rc1 (from Debian experimental repo) and tested a little. Couldn't reproduce so far.

Re: [Issue] Missing objects and footers
Most of the volunteers on this forum use the Sun (now Oracle) version from www.openoffice.org; the disadvantage of this on most (all?) linux distros is that it does not automatically update as the distro updates.

Re: [Issue] Missing objects and footers
RoryOF, looks like this bug is not distro-specific, so I guess I'll stay with debian's build. Pretty convenient, you know, when you don't have to care about updates =)

This issue appeared with OO 3.0 but the document was modified in 3.2 while created by 3.0.

Re: [Issue] Missing objects and footers
I know this doesn't help but it makes me really angry to loose all day work on such a huge bug. It's unbelievable that this goes through to stable release. I don't know if I can use OO for anything serious from now on. Lyx is the harder way but at least it works.

Re: [Issue] Missing objects and footers
I have the same problems. I make equations with the formula tool and they usually stay when I save, but randomly all the equations get lost when I reopen. How do i recover my work. This needs to be fixed.

Re: [Issue] Missing objects and footers
I'm running 3.2.1 and lost about two weeks worth or work! This is a major bug. Is there any way to recover all the formulas, and images. Everything is gone! Luckily I saved a different copy from two weeks ago, so I didn't lose two months worth of work.
I'm seriously considering going back to Word (although I don't care for microsoft) even with its whole host of problems. At least it doesn't delete all my work!
There must be a way to restore the links.
Does anyone have a clue what is going on?

Re: [Issue] Missing objects and footers
Sorry; the only way to recover anything is from your backups.
The other documents we're examined have completely lost all the missing objects--they are completely gone; there's nothing to recover. You can attach your document here if you like, or post a link to it, and we can check, but it's a slim hope.
It is a major problem, but, so far, no one has found a way to trigger it. It doesn't happen all the time and it doesn't happen at all to some users. It may have nothing to do with OOo at all; it could be a conflict with some other software on some systems, for example.
The response from the OOo developers is that, until the problem can be reproduced consistently, they will not spend any time trying to fix it.
Therefore, backups are your only option.

Can you give an approximate count of the formulae and images? Any information is valuable towards explaining why this is happening.jim010101 wrote:Is there any way to recover all the formulas, and images. Everything is gone!

Re: [Issue] Missing objects and footers
I'd be interested to learn whether there has been any progress made in terms of fixing this issue. The equations have disappeared from a manuscript I have been working on (as described in previous posts by others). I think we all agree this is a major bug. It really makes the program unusable for serious work that involves imbedded objects like equations.

Re: [Issue] Missing objects and footers
The report has been closed (fixed) and I think it's rather different because it talks about a spreadsheet with several sheets whereas here, equations just disappear. You should file a new report indeed, especially if you're using 3.2.1 (the version where the bug above should have been fixed according to the report).
