Cell corruption by Find + Copy + Paste

Post by ZILAT »

My data may be summarized by the first column for date, second for item name and third for price, in month sheets.
I use "Find" to select, in all sheets, a cell which contains a specific chain of characters in order to retrieve exact item name.
Then, I "Copy" the content (item name) of selected cell
Then, I "Paste" this content in a new cell in another sheet.

Surprisingly, when I repeat "Find", the copied item name will be pasted randomly in a cell and this cell is selected by "Find".

So, as long as "Find" is repeated, cells are randomly corrupted by the item name which was previously copied.

The bug appeared when upgrading version 3.2. I hoped it will be solved by upgrading to the last version.

Has anybody noticed it ?

I don't see any problem when following your description.

Perhaps you can attach a small sample sheet, with exact step-by-step instructions for observing the problem? You can use the "Upload Attachment" link (below the message entry area after you click "POST REPLY"). [Forum] How to attach a document here

I attached a sample of my file and I experienced again the bug.
Note that my keyboard is "AZERTY" which differ from american keyboard

Select cell : Sheet "fevrier 2010" Row 10 column D "200G MUNSTER FISHE 0200761000000"
Copy (cmd C) "0200761000000",
FIND (cmd F) and paste (cmd V) "0200761000000" - search in all sheets
FIND (return key)
The following cell is reached and selected : Sheet "septembre 2009" row 33 column D "FROMAGE - 200G MUNSTER FISHER 0200761000000"
Copy (cmd C) "FROMAGE - 200G MUNSTER FISHER 0200761000000"
Go back to the previous cell : Sheet "fevrier 2010" Row 10 column D "200G MUNSTER FISHE 0200761000000"
Paste "FROMAGE - 200G MUNSTER FISHER 0200761000000"
Repeat FIND (cmd F)

At that time, you will notice that an another cell is randomly selected and is content is turned into "FROMAGE - 200G MUNSTER FISHER 0200761000000"

Thanks for the nice, clear instructions.

I don't see a problem with a "random" cell receiving the pasted material, but I do see that the pasted cell in the last step goes into cell D5 in both sheets. It seems to only happen if I follow an exact sequence of clicks; e.g. it does not happen if I select the ID number, then click out of the cell to leave edit mode before I do the search.

Thank you very much to be interested by my question.
I do understand, now, that the error occurs, not at random, but in a cell with equivalent address in a second sheet. It appears to be connected with "edit mode".

Anyway, I believe it is a bug. Firstly, I never experienced this problem with previous version of OPEN OFFICE. Secondly, while testing the way you suggested to me, I encountered another "mistake"

Select cell : Sheet "fevrier 2010" D5 "200G MUNSTER FISHE 0200761000000"
Copy (cmd C) "0200761000000",
FIND (cmd F) and paste (cmd V) "0200761000000" - search in all sheets
FIND (return key)
The following cell is reached and selected : Sheet "septembre 2009" D33 "FROMAGE - 200G MUNSTER FISHER 0200761000000"
Copy (cmd C) "FROMAGE - 200G MUNSTER FISHER 0200761000000"
Go back to the previous cell : Sheet "fevrier 2010" D5 "200G MUNSTER FISHE 0200761000000"
Paste "FROMAGE - 200G MUNSTER FISHER 0200761000000"
Then
Go to D6 "COMTE MARRON OX 02008"11000000"

Repeat FIND (cmd F)

At that time you will notice that :
D5 in sheet "septembre 2009" is filled by the previous content of D5 in sheet "fevrier 2009", i.e. "200G MUNSTER FISHE 0200761000000" and not the pasted material

Don't you think it is a bug ?

That seems like the same problem--no?

Here's a simpler sheet, with steps to reproduce the problem.

If this seems clear and complete, feel free to submit it with a bug report; or, just ask and I can report it. If there's something else to report, please explain here and we can try to sort it out.

Please, report it.
I hope a solution will be found soon, so that I can go on carefree in my work.
I switched from Excel to OpenOffice Calc two years ago, although Calc (version 2.0) had not already reached the performance of Excel and had a lot of bugs. I was pleasantly surprised by always improving. I am very confident in the ability of the OpenOffice community to run far ahead.

Done: Issue 109084: search while in edit mode can cause data to be overwritten
You can register there and add your vote (up to two) or comment.

Remember, this can easily be avoided by simply clicking out of the cell after you finish copying the search string. I do this by habit because Calc has a long history of glitches when cell editing mode is not exited cleanly. It's always safe to click out of the editing cell, or press Enter or Escape, before going on to the next operation.
