[Issue] XY-scatter plot displays wrong data for datapoints

Post by heatlog »

Data from two temperature measurements are displayed in an xy-plot. Each datapoint is displayed correctly and with its number value correctly.

But, when hovering the mouse over a datapoint, a pop-up text displays data from a different datapoint set. (See the attached screenshot.)

Anyone who can help me with this?

Can you upload the file here? Change the values if there is anything sensitive.

Hi, Hagar,

Enclosed is an extract of the original file. The error is still there.
The second sheet is newly buildt using the sane data sets. There the error does not show up

I hope this is of a help.

Best regards,
heatlog

Wow, that chart is severely wrong: the data are not even plotted at the correct X coordinates.
Edit: OK, no, I see now: it's just the tooltip that's wrong.
I can't see why, though. If I copy the data to a new sheet and re-create the plot, it seems fine.

PS: Did you change the chart type at some point, or try to mix types? If I right-click on your chart and choose "Chart Type", it does not display a type, as I usually see.

PPS: If I "change" the Chart Type in your sheet to "XY (Scatter)", then it behaves correctly.

Hi, acknak !

Thank you for your comment and observation.

I tried what you said you had done, and found a difference depending on whether the "Sort by X-values" tick-box is checked or not.

When the box is not ticked, the tool-tip displays the correct datapoint values,
but when the tick-box is empty, the tool-tip displays the wrong values.

Would this then be a bug?

According to the help file:
Lines Only
This variant draws straight lines from one data point to the next. The data points are not shown by icons.
The drawing order is the same as the order in the data series. Mark Sort by X Values to draw the lines in the order of the x values. This sorting applies only to the chart, not to the data in the table.
If you activate the lines between points, then you see the difference: delete all the series except the real one to "clean" the chart, copy it and paste it. Activate the lines in both charts and look at the difference (unchecking that box in one of the charts). So yes, it seems to be a bug since the chart keeps the value and its label but change the tooltip to the fictive point. The fictive point X value seems to be... the line number!

Hello, Hagar,

So it is a bug. Could you please advice me on what to do with this now?
Do you, the moderators report it, or should I foreward this discussion (topic) somewhere.

Finally, thank you both Hagar and acknak for your kind help.

Best ragrds,
heatlog.

Sorry, should have provided the link right away: [Tutorial] Reporting bugs or suggestions.

No, moderators don't usually file the bug reports! We have enough work with the forum.

I agree that the "sort X values: YES" option does seem to lead to the erroneous tooltips. Good catch, Hagar!

I see it: Issue 100903: XY-scatter plot tooltip displays wrong data depending upon whether the "Sort by X values" is ticked or not.

Nice! Thanks.
