Did you install a localized (non-English) 3.4 and the 3.4 en-us language pack over 3.1, or just the 3.4 language pack?

The language pack is simply that - the configuration of differing dialogues and dictionaries for the stated language. I think the file you need is
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openoff ... e/download
This file is something like 140MB, whereas a language pack might be about 25 MB (i.e., a great file size difference).

Further to my previous post I have discovered where the problem stems from.
First I logged on to my PC as a local machine Administrator and everything works as expected.
So I copied the local Administrator's user profile and used it for my domain user (who is not an administrator), problem still exists.
I conclude that there is no issues with the profile data.
Next I logged onto the PC as a domain administator with a roaming profile and no redirection (effectively %AppData% resides on the local machine after log on). Everything works as expected.
Finally I logged onto the PC as a domain administator with a roaming profile AND redirection (effectively %AppData% resides on a networked drive). This is the same setup as my every day user (roaming profie with redirection).
Guess what? It doesn't work! I get the exact same failure as documented in my previous post.
So the porblem lies with the setting of %AppData%.
All works as expected when the location is: "%USERPROFILE%\Application Data".
It does not work when set to: "%LOGONSERVER%\home\%USERNAME%\Application Data", and redirection is in place.
Additionally I thought that maybe there was a hard-coded path so I copied the entire "Application Data/OpenOffice.org" directory and placed a copy of it in my local profile direcotry ("%USERPROFILE%\Application Data"). The problem still exists!
I cannot conclude anything more other than to say there is a problem and it is to do with the %AppData% location and possibly networked drives.
Can somebody please log this as a bug.

Log on to your PC as local Administrator, and check OpenOffice version (/Help /About). It should be Apache OpenOffice 3.4.

This is correct. OpenOffice.org 3.4.0.
The original reason to logon as an Administrator was to ensure that there was only one version of OpenOffice installed and to perform a fresh install.
(All software is intalled locally to the machine, we don't have any network installed apps.)

OK. I just wanted to be certain it was installed, and not a 3.4 language pack overlaid on a 3.3 or earlier.

There was a problem with roaming profiles in this thread
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/ ... =7&t=54679

How relevant it is to your case I cannot say - off the air now to cook dinner.

I have discovered, after a long investigation, the actual bug and yes it is a bug!
First it has nothing to do with roaming profiles as I performed the exact same upgrade on my home PC. I installed OO 3.4 over the top of OO 3.1.
Everything worked as expected whether I was logged in as an admin or a dumb user.

So I placed my %AppData% directory onto my home networked drive, setup redirection to the network share using network share notation, for example: “\\MyServer\\home\Application Data” and now OO spell checking facility fails (non existent).
So I changed the redirection to use a windows drive letter, for example: “H:\Application Data” and now OO spell checking facility works as expected.

So in short the bug is this:
OpenOffice 3.4, with respect to the spell checking facility, does not like the %AppData% directory path setting using network share notation, for example: “\\MyServer\\home\Application Data”.
The spell checking facility in OO 3.4 only works when the %AppData% directory path is set up using a drive letter, for example: “H:\Application Data”

Please copy and notify developers of this bug.

Do you want me to log this bug or will somebody here handle it?
I have submitted bug reports before so its no problem...

I think you should log it, as you have "hands-on" knowledge of the paths etc.

Hi,
Did anyone ever log this bug and if so, could you post the link to the bug post here. We're struggling with the same problem here.

Was there ever a workaround found other than mapping everyone's remote folder to a local Windows Drive (which I think Microsoft are trying to deprecate)? AppData is normally hidden from users and isn't something you'd want to encourage/enable them to access so mapping it seems like asking for trouble. On that note, I did find this tip on how to hide drives, but I've not tried it out.
http://www.online-tech-tips.com/compute ... n-windows/

Also, does anyone know if this bug is present in LibraOffice? I've not tried it because I'm putting my trust in OO working again at some point.

Thanks

Further to my last (as yet not approved) post, I found the link to the bug report here.

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=120330

It looks like it's had no activity at all.

I've figured out a work around for now, although it's not great if you use a mixture of roaming and non-roaming profiles

http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/vi ... 426#p61192
Using the above link I realised you can change the UserInstallation path in bootstrap.ini from

UserInstallation=$SYSUSERCONFIG/OpenOffice.org/3
to
UserInstallation=file://///filestore1/userprofiles/$USERNAME/OpenOffice.org/3

[Bootstrap]
BaseInstallation=${OOO_BASE_DIR}
InstallMode=<installmode>
ProductKey=OpenOffice.org 3.4.1
UserInstallation=file://///filestore1/userprofiles/$USERNAME/OpenOffice.org/3
[ErrorReport]
ErrorReportPort=80
ErrorReportServer=

This seems to work fine.

Alternatively, you can change your shortcuts for an individual user to something along the lines of:

"C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 3\program\soffice.exe" -env:UserInstallation=file://///filestore1/userprofiles/$USERNAME/OpenOffice.org/3

I hope this helps someone.

I should add that if you've got a space in your path, you should use URL encoding to fill it, i.e. %20

file://///filestore1/userprofiles/$USERNAME/Application%20Data/OpenOffice.org/3

May be later, but ...

My customer we have AD network (samba4) with redirected folders and has had same problem with spelling (local admin work with spellchecker OK). I found only one solution:

disable quick start (probably, I did it)
delete all OO profiles (\\server\Users\<username>\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user), but also check if same directory is not in local path (C:\Users ....)
add user to local Administrator groups
logoff user
logon again
run OpenOffice
check spellcheck
logoff user
remove user from local Administrator group
