Spellcheck not working with new file by right click

Post by command_liner »

Yesterday I set up a new Win7 machine and was surprised to find the spell check
bug from 2+ years ago is in the brand new downloads.

On a brand new Win7 with brand new OO installed, if you right-click and start OO,
the spell checker does not work. It will NEVER work if you start with right-click,
unless you use that tortuous work-around about setting the language in some obscure
dialog.

Need spell check to work? Start OO from the Start menu. Better yet, copy an
existing document, delete all the content and go from there. Right-click to open
and existing document and spell check works.

Right-click to create a new document and spell check never works. It has been
this way for a long time. Years. Can it be fixed?

That's an old bug with an easy workaround. See: Issue 40233 - Making a new document from a context menu doesn't use a template. This bug has been fixed in 3.3.
Workaround:
  • Create a new document (will be based on your default template)
  • save it as soffice.odt, overwriting the file in the folder (you may have to do that as administrator):
    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Templates for Windows before Vista
    • C:\Users\All Users\Templates or C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Templates in both Vista and Windows 7.

Respectfully, I disagree that the issue has been fixed.
Yesterday when I built a new Windows system, and installed OO 3.3.0 b9567,
this long-term bug was still a long-term bug. No fix has been applied to
the current distribution.

See the attached images. Start menu is no problem. But right-click and
make a new file, then open the file, that ALWAYS fails, as it has for years.
This particular bit of reality might be unpleasant, but this is the way it
works today.

I agree. I'm not sure the fix is a real one.
And anyway if you change your default template, then OOo or even the OS can't know that it has to change that template. So the only real fix is to replace the template in the OS path. If you want the devs to be aware of that, just reopen the bug or add a comment.

Please add '[Solved]' at the beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.
