[Solved] Writer automatically resizing pictures
[Solved] Writer automatically resizing pictures
I have a .doc file that I am editing using both MS Word 2007 and LibreOffice Writer 3.4.3. Why? - because neither OO or LO does not handle Section breaks and a few other things the same way MS Word does.
Anyhow ....
My problem is, after doing what needs to be done in MS Word, and then saving the file and opening it using either LibreOffice Writer 3.4.3 or OO Writer 3.3.0, for some unknown reason - Writer is automatically resizing the pictures (jpg files) in the document - reducing their size, and is also adding a border around them.
I have tried changing file format - saving the file in MS Word using the odt format - and this did not resolve the problem.
Any ideas?

Re: Writer automatically resizing pictures and adding a bord
Work in Word or (exclusive or: XOR) Writer; formatting is never 100% invariant between the two.

Are you sure that the border is visible when the document is printed? Check the print preview. It be the border of the frame style applied to the pic.
And of course, avoid using OOo for .doc.

Re: Writer automatically resizing pictures and adding a bord
It is definitely visible. The only way I can get rid of it is to right click on the picture, and under Borders/Style - change it to None.
Needless to say, since there are numerous pictures in this document - and re-sizing and removing the border for each one is quite a chore.

Can you upload a sample file (see How to attach a document here)?

Re: Writer automatically resizing pictures and adding a bord
Hagar,
Please find attached a test document - which is actually a subset of the original. It was save using MS Word 2007 in .doc format since I figured you would want to try opening it in OO and/or LO.
Thanks for your help.

Sorry about that. I did not realize it did not take.
Here is the attachment now. Unfortunately, due to size limitation of what can be uploaded, I could provide only a small example. The picture that keeps getting a border added and keeps get resized is the one between CHAPTER ONE and THE QUESTION.

The border does not show up in Page Preview for me (on your unmodified file), although it shows up in normal editing mode. It is 3cm long, stretching from the last upright of h in Chapter to the first upright of n in One. I'm using OOo 3.3 on Ubuntu 11.04.

Works fine for me too.
You can disable the border in Tools>Options>Appearance and uncheck Object boundaries.
Please add '[Solved]' at the beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Thanks all for your help.
While disabling the border in Tools>Options>Appearance does resolve the border problem. It does not resolve the problem with jpg files being resized on an inconsistent basis.
More and more I am starting to believe what I am dealing with is an MS World - OO & LO incompatibity problem thus will mark this as Solve since I don't think a resolution can be found.

Re: [Solved] Writer automatically resizing pictures
Can you upload a zip with both the .doc file and the .odt file saved from the .doc file?

Re: [Solved] Writer automatically resizing pictures
Yes - but it take a little while. I'm about to have supper and will get to it when I'm finished.
I noticed today that on top of what was previously mentioned, I noticed that in the original doc file a couple of jpg files where set up in Word to use grayscale - yet in LO they show in full color. Also one the jpg files did not maintain it's horizonal center alignment - also Drop caps created in Word does not show up proper in LO.
Changed the file saved in Word as odt does fix the problem with the jpg showing in color in LO.

Re: [Solved] Writer automatically resizing pictures
I recollect reports of some differences in jpg files when displayed in OpenOffice; from memory these were to do with the files being encoded as RGB or CMYK - one worked correctly, one displayed as negative. If you are positioning a limited number of images, you might try converting your images to tiff. Also worth adjusting the memory settings under OpenOffice / Tools / Options.

Correction. No I cannot upload a Zip of the complete original document. 7-Zip, for some unknown reason, will not compress it small enough to where I can upload it.

Re: [Solved] Writer automatically resizing pictures
You can use mediafire if above the 128kB limit.

Re: [Solved] Writer automatically resizing pictures
Thanks for letting me know about mediafire, Hagar. However, since my last post I have found a good workaround for the problem.
In doing some research I discovered a MS Word plug-in called: Sun ODF Plugin für Microsoft Office 3.2
After installing this and using the recommendations above - all the problems I was having seem to no longer exist if I save the file in Word using the odt format.
Unfortunately, OO and LO still has a compatiblity problem with the .doc format.
However, if I am able to resolve the problem using this plug in and the above recommendations - why bother with the .doc format until such time the document needs to be sent to the publisher?
Thanks all for your help!
