File contains nothing but ####

Hi there

Ok I have an important open office doc and for some reason today the whole damn file just seemed to have " died "

The text has turned into gobbledygook. I tried to burn it to a CDR and put the file in another PC but it was just a few pages of nothing but number signs #######
Right now it is not responding and it says it has 189 pages when it is suppose to have only 40. One time I looked at it and the first few pages where ok but after that it looked like Japanese or something. I thought I was hacked but my friends just think the file got corrupted. Do word processing documents sometimes just get corrupted and just plain royally screw up?? I have this thing backed up like 20 times so I am not worried about that but I am just wondering how this happened ... ;(

Anyone have any idea?
