[Solved] Auto filename extension broken in OOo 3.0.1
[Solved] Auto filename extension broken in OOo 3.0.1
Using a file such as testing.odt, using the export to PDF function (either on File menu or the toolbar button) brings up the save dialogue.
With auto extension ticked or not, clicking save (with no file extension) results in the message 'testing.odt already exists. Do you want to replace it?". In OOO300 it would have just created the file testing.pdf.

Re: Auto filename extension appears broken in OOO301
Would you please tell us what exactly you are doing?
I tested the PDF export as follows:
menu:File>Export as PDF...
Confirm standard options.
Get the ordinary Save-As-dialog where I can provide a file name with option to automatically add a file name extension.
Without automatic extension the file is saved by whatever name I provide.
Say, I provide a file name with extension such as "name.odt", an equally named office document will be overwritten after confirmation with a new "name.odt" being a PDF atually. You told it to save under exactly that name with a "wrong" extension.
If I give a name without any extension, the PDF will be saved without extension as "name".
If you have trouble opening the file (no problem under Linux, btw) then you can simply rename the file to anything with a ".pdf" suffix.
With automatic extension:
Say, I provide a file name with extension such as "name.odt", an equally named office document will NOT be overwritten. The extension for the PDF file format will be added automatically. I end up with a new PDF named "name.odt.pdf". If there is a "name.odt.pdf" already the file will be overwritten after confirmation.
Without any extension I get a file "name.pdf".
OK, now I try giving the name "name.pdf". I'd expect that the automatic extension to append another ".pdf", so I end up with "name.pdf.pdf" since this is how stupid programs use to work. But instead OOo recognizes that the given name ends with ".pdf" already. It promts me for confirmation to override the existing file "name.pdf".
Same OOo-version as yours under Linux.

Re: Auto filename extension appears broken in OOO301
The problem only occurs when I do not type anything in the filename field but leave it as the default filename (without extension).
If I type a new file name, or even retype the default filename, then it works properly.
So, in sequence,
Open file called 'name.odt'
File->Export as PDF ...
Export
Save
causes the problem.
However,
Open file called 'name.odt'
File->Export as PDF ...
Export
Type 'name' in the file dialogue
Save
works.
Hope this helps (but it looks like an initialisation issue to me), This is definitely a change from OOO300 as I do this type of exporting a lot.
Cheers
Paul

Thank you for clarification. I can't reproduce the problem under Linux. It's definitively worth filing an issue. [Tutorial] Reporting bugs or suggestions

If I understand this problem correctly, this appears to be a Vista related issue. If Open file called 'name.odt'
File->Export as PDF ...
Export
Save
This works as expected for me in XPProSP3. I get "name.pdf".

Re: [Issue] Auto filename extension appears broken in OOo 3.0.1
Just for the record, the active issue is: Issue 98983.
The plan is for the problem to be fixed in OOo 3.1 (due in late March).
Until then, the best workaround is to use the OpenOffice.org file dialogs instead of the standard Vista dialogs:
Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > General > Use OpenOffice.org dialogs: YES

Hey, thanks for the dialogs tip:
I've been having the same trouble trying to export a PDF in Vista and found this post, which saved the day!the best workaround is to use the OpenOffice.org file dialogs instead of the standard Vista dialogs:
Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > General > Use OpenOffice.org dialogs: YES
Re: [Solved+Issue] Auto filename extension broken in OOo 3.0.1
Just wanted to note that this isn't just a .pdf problem. It's a problem with "saving as" with every file format. If you save as a "odt" file to "doc", you get the "file exists error". Same with saving as from ods to xls.

The same problem appeared for me after I upgraded to 3.0.1
Print to PDF button exports to a pdf file but it keeps the .odt file type.
I used vbox linux to rename the file as pdf. that is, if saved as blar.odt rename it blar.pdf and it is perfectly readable in Adobe.
Not sure of any tool in Vista to change file type as linux user normally, only using windows because work/uni uses it
