Problems with two files

Post by Danconsum »

Hi.

Got a problem at work with 2 files witch I can´t read normaly. Writer only shows different symbols. Tried to open them when they were saved as rtf, but no luck.

I can send the file to test it.

Thanks

You can upload them here if they aren't too big. If they are too big, you can upload them to a file sharing site like www.mediafire.com.
How did you save them? Did you type extension rtf or doc, or did you select the file type from the list in the dialog box?

I'm afraid that they're totally corrupted.

+1. Only some files impacted? All in RTF format?

It is always safer to work in the native OOo formats (.odt and .ods etc) and then use Save As to save a copy in .doc or .xls or whatever format if you need to distribute it. But always then go back to the native OOo version to continue working. If the people you are sending to do not need to edit the files then it is best to send them a PDF as then no matter what office suite they use it will be possible for them to read and print the files.

Every byte in those files is a hex zero byte 0x00. They're dead.

I remember a similar case recently - anyone remember the thread or in what forum it was? This file destruction is worth investigating.

I remember seeing other threads where there was nothing but 0x00 bytes in corrupted files.

Here's two:
Really desperately need help with corruption
Problem With Recovered Document
Edit: What they seem to have in common is they were working in non-.odt formats and their PC's locked up.
