Word count over counts words
I typed a letter, and Writer reported 344 words, which seemed high. I manually counted them and came up with 265. I copied the letter into MS Word and I go t 265. It seems that Writer may be counting such thins as commas, hyphens, and paragraph breaks as words.

There are some reports indeed about the word count in OOo, see here.

With that much difference, I would suspect that you're counting words in a header, footer, or footnote too. Try selecting the text first.

Re: Word count over counts words
Someone suggested that I had counted words in headers and footers, etc. The letter had none of these, just several paragraphs of text.
