I need help with scanning

Post by vesteros »

Hi
I'm using OpenOffice.org 2.4
Operating System is XP Media Center with sp2
I need to scan a resume and then be able to make changes in it.
Do I need to download an OCR? If so do you know of any freeware programs that will work with Open Office?
Do i save the scanned page as a txt, tiff, bmp, jpeg etc???
Please explain step by step process for completing this project.
much thanks

Try Free OCR. It is very basic, but also very easy to use. Run the program separately, and copy and paste recognised text to OpenOffice via the clipboard. There is no need to save the scans, though you can if you wish.

Don't scanners come with OCR software anymore? The OCR that came with my HP scanner is terrible, but that seems to be the case with most OCR software.

I found most OCR software to be terrible. There may be some commercial stuff that's worthwhile, but I haven't seen it. I just retype; even allowing for the fact that my typing is terrible, it takes me less time than scanning then correcting all the OCR errors.

+1.
I tried once the an OCR and it's more time consuming to spot all the errors and modify single characters in the middle of words than typing the text.

Do you have Microsoft NET Framework 2.0 or later installed? This is required to run Free OCR.
