Keep Java 6 with Apache OO 3.4?

Post by sblackwelder »

Is that the only way to get access to the database I built and started populating with OO 3.3 and Java 6? The conflict between Apache OO 3.4 and Java 7 is an unpleasant surprise.

OpenOffice permits the user to nominate which version of Java it will use, of all the Java versions installed on the computer; select this under /Tools/options/OpenOffice.org : Java. It works best with Java 1.6 and there is no workaround.

I recently installed both Java 7 and OpenOffice 3.4 and OpenOffice has become unusable because there seems to be an incompatibility between both softwares.

Java 7 erased Java 6 during installation.

How can I get back to Java 6?

Or is there another way around?

Try to reinstall Java 6. I've not tried Java 7 but with previous versions, there was no removal of the former versions.

Is there anybody out there who can describe clearly and reproducibly any problem with Java7?
Under Linux(32) and Win(32) with Java7(32) I can export XHTML, start Java wizards, create database reports using either of both report tools.
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

[1] AOO will recognize Java 7 and load and run without it.

[2] AOO requires 32 bit Java.

[3] AOO Base and some extensions issue Java calls which require Java 6.

[4] Java 6 and Java 7 can coexist on the same system in both WInXP and OS X. In the case of OS X, I also have Java 8 on the system.

[5] While Java 7 is now at update 4, it has problems with some programs - AOO is one of them.

The conflict is not only Java 7 and OOo derivatives, but exists with other programs as well.

I'm amazed at the lack of issues raised with OO3.4 and JRE7.04 perhaps hardly anyone is trying to use the combo.

I've been struggling with the beast for a week on and off. I (foolishly) updated to 3.4 and at a similar time JRE 7 and (even more foolishly ) as advised by Oracle, removed version 6 from my machine before testing the new setup
Java seemed quite happy with the upgrade as did Chrome (which may have been using 7 for months, who knows) but OO made 2 complaints in different places, both when I loaded Base
1. The JRE is defective, no sdbc driver could be found, reinstall again. which I did, 5 or 6 times both online and offline ??? whatever that means (other than one is 850K and the other 10 Meg)

2. No JRE is installed on this machine, which simply blocked Base

Finding a replacement JRE6 was much more difficult than I imagined but my perseverence finally paid off not at the Java site but deep inside Oracle

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/ ... index.html

its well down the page out of first view.

Also do everyones JRE's in OOo>options>Java take 30 secs to populate or is it only when my machine goes slo'mo and needs a reboot

Perhaps it deserves a mention in a more prominent place. Remove my name and paste it to Hagars Announcement
Many opportunities to add short Tutorials or faq's are missed

1. Must have obvious title to be found easily
2. Keep to objectives
3. Use very clear language
4. Difficult to get right
5. Rewards are few

I have seen reference to Java-related problems, possibly on the issues site. You can help in development of the software by commenting on or voting for an issue or (if no issue exists) creating one.

From memory, an older version is required for some functions.

There is a forum tutorial explaining how to file an issue (bug report).

Since posts about the Java 7 issue have been appearing for about a year now (including a bug notice), we forget that sometimes people miss the obvious. In your case the unfortunate change is that with update of Java 7 to 4, the java.com site has taken to suggesting removal of previous versions. This is likely due to liability issues with previous verisons, although Java 6 (and Java 8) also have the security fixes.

We likely need an FAQ on Java, especially in light of the removal of dependency on Java for OOo derivative starting.
