Document broken

My final year project document is broken, it was around 30 pages at the time with some diagrams and now when i try to open it, opne office comes up with ASCII filter options and then only displays 4 pages of #. Worse still the document size is now only 20KB, I did a system restore to no avail, just wondering if yous have any suggestions to try recover it. Pretty sure for whatever reason its gone for good still.
