[Solved] 100 million downloads: when ?

Post by squenson »

Hi everyone,

On March 26th, 2009, OpenOffice 3.0 reached 50 million downloads. You can see the latest counter here.

I propose you a simple contest: Which day and exact time* will OpenOffice 3 (all releases together) reach the 100 million download mark? The winner will gain an international fame among the OpenOffice community, for sure! Only one vote per member, and a message edited more than one day after the initial post will not be taken into consideration. You can vote several time but please do not edit your previous posts to keep the history.

Calc ready, set, go!

The answer is October 28th, 2009, 05:54:27. The winner is Johnclarke. The contest is closed.

* The exact time, expressed in GMT, will be: if n1 is the number of downloads the day before 100,000,000 and n2 the day after, the time will be: (100 000 000 - n1) / (n2 - n1) * 86 400 seconds after 00:00 GMT.

And my guess: 10 September, 2009, 19:20:31.

(Perhaps there ought to be a cut off for entries when the download total has reached a certain figure?)

Good idea, OTOH I have allowed several votes per individual. Let's see the trend and the estimates converging to the magic number.

Well, we were far from the reality! Slightly more than 88,000,000 now. Seems like end of the year should be more realistic.
So here is my new guess: 6th December at 19:37.

December 21st, at 9:12 pm.
That would be 21.12 21:12 in a notation according to my locale. I just liked the symmetry ...

OK, after very complex and sophisticated calculations (in Calc!) I believe that we will reach the 100 millionth download on October 21st, 2009, at 21:07:48.

We are already up to 93 million at the first of October. It will definitely happen this month.

100,000,000 downloads

On October 28th. 2009, the one hundred millionth person clicked on the Download OpenOffice.org button since version 3.0 of the software was announced just over one year ago.

No doubt then, John Clark did come up with the ultimate answer (and not just to life, the universe and everything...)

As there was no clear limit to time of entry, and he did enter well ahead of the actual 100'' passing, I say we have a winner.

Hi John,

Now in regards to the dispersing of your winnings.

The funds are currently being held by an ex-goverment official in Nigeria...a financial transaction between their bank and yours...well, of course there will be the small detail of your placing some amount of funds into an escrow account, as a of Bond, before the full monies can be released to your custody.

:ucrazy:

Congratulations indeed on your prediction.

-AND- to all the folks in the OpenOffice.org community that helped make this a reality.
