[Solved] Trouble with Installation on Fedora 16

Post by cjpicc11 »

Hello Everyone,

I am experiencing problems with the installation of Open Office 3.3.0 on Fedora16. I have been able to install this version previosly following the same steps, but have had to format my HDD since. When I reinstalled Fedora16 and attempted to install Open Office again I experience the problem shown below.

Problem:
'[root@Chris-Linux OOO330_m20_native_packed-1_en-US.9567]# ./setup
Checksumming...
Extracting ...
97072 blocks
./setup: line 271: usr/java/jre1.6.0_22/bin/unpack200: cannot execute binary file
ERROR: Failed to unpack JAR file:

lib/rt.jar

Installation failed. Please refer to the Troubleshooting Section of
the Installation Instructions on the download page.
/dev/pts/0
Error: Failed to extract the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) files. (exit code 8)
[root@Chris-Linux OOO330_m20_native_packed-1_en-US.9567]#'

Any help is much appreciated.

Best Regards,
Chris

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Don't use the setup script, use your package manager instead. If you need the command lines, search the forum for topics related to Fedora.

Please add '[Solved]' at the beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

I install using rpm -Uvh *.rpm in a terminal as root. You have to be in the folder containing the rpms. The instructions from OO used to say to install the appropriate desktop integration file after installing the other rpms but I move it to the same folder as the others because rpm will install them in the correct order.

I removed the Java files (except for Java filter) because I install Java from the distro. There is no installer for en-GB without java.

I always recommend using the Fedora-packaged OOo rather than the download from OO.org, unless you have some specific reason not to. The Fedora packages are much easier to install and they are integrated with the rest of the system.

Just use the software manager and look in the "Office" section.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I installed libreoffice instead using 'yum install libreoffice'. That downloaded and installed very easily...

Have a great New Year!
