[Solved] Spellcheck not working on Windows 7 x64

Post by Waldo120 »

Hi, I've installed openoffice on my windows 7 x64 machine. And the spellcheck doesn't work. I don't get any errors, it just doesn't highlight anything, and if I manually run a spellcheck it says everything is spelt right.

I double checked that the english dictionary "dict-en.oxt" exists in "C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice.org 3\share\extension\install". I've also manually changed my language in the options to English US.

If I look at the same doc file on a Virtual XP machine on my win 7 machine it spellchecks just fine and finds the abundance of spelling errors you'd expect from an engineer.

So you run 3.x, correct (your signature says 2.4, see How to update your software information signature).

I guess there is nothing wrong with all the steps here: [Troubleshooting] Spell check in OOo 3.x.

Does it work for new documents?

Opps, sorry. Been a while, old signature. Yes, I'm on 3.1.1.

Looks like adding the below extension worked. Wonder why it wasn't automatically added.

C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice.org 3\share\extension\install\dict-en.oxt

Thanks for the help.

Don't know why but you're not the first one to have experienced that problem. Not sure if it is specific to Windows 7.

Specific to 64-bit OS?

Don't know, I was thinking about that one (but no information about the architecture): No spell check when using windows 7.

Hi, I fixed this on my user account, and recently my wife had the same issue and I had to manually configure it again under her profile.

Is there some way to do this for "all users".

When you install the extension, it should ask if you want it for all users or for current only IIRC. Perhaps you need to be logged as admin to do that under Seven.

Yep, had to right click and "run as admin" for that option to show.

Thanks.
