Disappearing coloured bullets.

Post by andy_at_signality »

If I create a simple Writer document where each line has a simple (default) bullet in front of it, save it (.odt) and reopen it then the bullets are there as you'd expect.

If I create the same document (or just edit the existing one) but select some cheery shaped coloured bullets and do the same then they are lost in the reopened document. The indentation is still there but there are no bullets.

I had this trouble in the Mepis 8 64bit .deb install of OOo 3.0.0 and have just updated to the OOo 3.1.0 64bit .deb but the behaviour hasn't changed.

Tried using Times New Roman and Arial fonts just in case it might be some sort of font substitution problem but no change.

If I export the file to .pdf after saving (but obviously before closing it!), then the cheery bullets are still there in the pdf.

I've read some posts elsewhere in the forum about problems with bullets but they don't seem to relate to this behaviour.

Any ideas?

Running OOo 3.1 m11 build 9399 on Mepis 8.0.6 64bit Linux.

What method are you using to change the bullet type please?

Here's exactly what I've done.

Fresh install of OOo 3.1. No changes to config files, options etc.

Open a new Writer doc

Enter

Line 1
Line 2
Line 3
Line 4
Line 5
Line 6

Select all lines and click on ”Bullets On/Off".
This indents all lines, inserts small black bullets and a tab space between each bullet and the text of each line.

This also pops open the "Bullets and Numbering" floating toolbar.

So the text now looks more or less like this (- = space, * = bullet):

--*--Line 1
--*--Line 2
--*--Line 3
--*--Line 4
--*--Line 5
--*--Line 6

Place cursor on any line (1 to 6) , click on far right hand button ("Bullets and Numbering") of floating toolbar.

Pops open "Bullets and Numbering" window. Select "Graphics" tab, choose top left blue spheres, click "OK".

Lines look the same as above except that each black dot is replaced by a cheery blue sphere.

Save document to home folder.

Close document.

Reopen document by clicking on document icon in home folder (though opening from OOo 3.1 makes no difference).

Bullets gone.

Looks like this now:

-----Line 1
-----Line 2
-----Line 3
-----Line 4
-----Line 5
-----Line 6

Deep sadness.

Hmmmmm.

Works fine for me as long as I use native ODF format (.odt). I confirm that if I save as .doc, back to the black bullet.

You can file a bug report (if not done already by someone else): [Tutorial] Reporting bugs or suggestions.

Sorry, one vital piece of info I forgot to include: I am doing this in native (.odt) format!

In fact, you had said that in your first post! My fault.

But I still can't reproduce that. Will check this evening on my xubuntu box. NB: I'm using the colored bullets in the Graphics tab of the properties.

I'm using Graphics tab in the popup floating menu bar to edit the bullets as described but I get the same problem by any other route.

Could it be something to do with the jre?

OOo tools > options > JAVA (with use jre ticked) finds:

Sun Microsystems Inc. 1.6.0_0 with accessibility support.

located in

/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre

Well, it works fine with 3.1 on my xubuntu Jaunty system. Could it be a bug of the 64bit version?

No, I don't think it's related to the JRE.

Here is a file with colored arrows, is the display correct?

I downloaded the file to my desktop and opened it in Writer.
Opens OK, top line followed by 4 indented lines with little red arrows as bullets roughly like this.

Test file
..--> ..test
..--> ..test
..--> ..test
..--> ..test

If I copy the file and open that one it's fine.
If open the original (or the copy) and then "Save As ... " in Writer then when I open the new file (attached) the bullets have gone.

So what I see is like this:

Test file
........test
........test
........test
........test

A bug in the 64 bit version would explain my seeing this behaviour in 3.0.0 and 3.1.0
I don't yet have a 32 bit Linux machine with 3.0.0 or 3.1.0 installed yet.

:!: If I get half an hour or so I'll try booting up this machine with the Mepis 32bit Live cd and see if the same thing happens with the 32 bit Mepis repo version of Writer.

Note that you can install the 32bit version on your 64bit system, you may have to add the --force-architecture parameter in the dpkg command.

Hi,

Tried three more things.

i) Tried running 32 bit OOo 3.0.0 straight from a 32bit Mepis 8.0 Linux Live CD. That seems to work fine: if I put coloured bullets in and save the file then close and reopen OOo and then the file, the bullets are still there.

ii) If I do exactly the same thing with 64bit OOo 3.0.0 straight from a 64bit Mepis 8.0 Linux Live CD then it shows the same loss of coloured bullets as my actual installation.

iii) I also tried installing 32 bit OOo 3.1 using dpkg --force-architecture -i *.deb in the same way I installed the 64bit OOo 3.1 but this would not run. It crashed immediately, tried to recover untitled.odt and then crashed again every time I asked it to recover.

Looks like time for me to file a 64 bit OOo 3.1 bug report ....

Edit: Seems someone has beaten me to it: see issue 101131.
